Three-Card

Past · Present · Future

Cards fall reversed as they would in a hand shuffle: some readings have none, others several. Change

About the Three-Card spread

The three-card spread is the most widely used tarot layout, and for good reason: it is fast, it fits almost any question, and three cards are enough to show movement. The first card shows what is passing, the second where things stand, and the third where they are heading.

It works best for a single, specific question, or as a snapshot of a situation you are in the middle of. When three cards are not enough, the Horseshoe or the Celtic Cross give the same story more room.

The positions

  1. 1Past. What has shaped this and is now receding?
  2. 2Present. What is at the heart of the matter right now?
  3. 3Future. What is coming next?

How to lay it out with your own deck

  1. Hold your question in mind and shuffle until it feels done.
  2. Lay three cards face down in a row, left to right: past, present, future.
  3. Turn them one at a time, or all at once, and read each in its position before reading them together.
  4. Notice the direction of travel: is the story getting lighter or heavier from left to right?

How to read it

  • Read the middle card first. The present is the hinge; the past explains it and the future follows from it.
  • The future card is a trajectory, not a verdict. It shows where things lead if nothing changes, which also tells you what to change.
  • Look for repeats: two cards of the same suit put the question firmly in that area of life; two Major Arcana cards make it bigger than day-to-day.
  • You can use other three-position frames with the same layout: situation, action, outcome; or you, the other person, the relationship.

Questions

How do you read a three-card tarot spread?
Read each card in its position first: the left card as what has shaped the situation and is now passing, the middle as the heart of it now, the right as what comes next. Then read them as one story, from left to right.
Is the future card a prediction?
It shows where the situation is heading on its current course. Tarot describes tendencies rather than fixed events, so the future card is most useful as a warning or an encouragement about what to do now.
What questions work best for three cards?
Open questions about one situation: "What do I need to understand about this job?" or "Where is this friendship going?" For a straight yes or no, a single card is clearer.
What does it mean if all three cards are reversed?
A spread of reversed cards suggests energy that is blocked, delayed or turned inward. The situation may be moving slowly, or more is happening inside you than around you.
