The image

A queen sits squarely on a throne carved with lions and sunflowers, a staff in one hand and a sunflower in the other, her knees apart and her gaze direct. A black cat sits at her feet facing outward. The throne is set in open, sunlit country.

Upright meaning

The Queen of Wands is confidence that warms rather than burns. She knows what she wants, says so, and somehow makes everyone around her braver for it. The sunflower is her openness; the black cat is the shadow she keeps on friendly terms. In a reading she shows warm leadership, independence, charisma, sexual and creative confidence, and the ability to run a household, a business or a room without apology. She is a good person to be or to have on your side.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the fire turns inward or against others. The card shows jealousy, a need to be the centre that becomes demanding, confidence collapsing into self-doubt, or a vitality burnt out by giving too much. It can also mark a person who makes herself smaller to keep the peace. The cat has left her feet. The remedy is honesty about what she needs, said plainly, before resentment says it for her.

Queen of Wands: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Queen of Wands is a clear yes: warm leadership and confidence are on your side.
Reversed
Not yet
Queen of Wands reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but jealousy and self-doubt delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Queen of Wands by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. Warmth and confidence that draw people in. You know your worth in a relationship and ask for it without apology. For couples, a partner who brings light and loyalty in equal measure.

Reversed. Jealousy, insecurity or a confidence that has gone brittle. You may be shrinking to fit someone, or demanding attention to fill a doubt. The warmth is still yours; the fear is the problem.

work and career

Upright. Warm, confident leadership: a manager people want to work for, a presence that draws clients and colleagues. You know your worth and ask for it. Lead with the warmth; it is your advantage.

Reversed. Confidence gone brittle: jealousy of a colleague, insecurity under a bold front, shrinking to fit a role. The warmth is still yours; the fear is the problem.

money

Upright. Confidence with money: knowing your worth and charging it, managing a household or a business with warmth and command. Lead with the confidence; it is an asset.

Reversed. Insecurity under a confident front: comparing your finances to others', spending to keep up, shrinking your rates. The worth is still yours; the fear is the problem.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Warmth and vitality: a body you feel at home in, confidence that shows, energy to spare. Lead with it. Wellbeing here is magnetic.

Reversed. Insecurity about your body under a confident front, or energy gone brittle. Comparison is draining you. The vitality is still yours; the fear is the problem.

family and home

Upright. Warmth at the centre of the home: a matriarch, a host, someone whose confidence makes everyone welcome. Lead the household with that warmth.

Reversed. Jealousy or insecurity in a family role, or a warm presence gone brittle. You may be shrinking to fit a relative's expectations. The warmth is yours; the fear is the problem.

personal growth

Upright. Warmth, magnetism and self-possession: knowing your worth and carrying it lightly. You draw people because you are at ease with yourself. Lead with the warmth.

Reversed. Insecurity under a confident front, or jealousy of others' light. You may be shrinking to fit. The warmth is still yours; the fear is the problem.

the spiritual path

Upright. Warmth and magnetism on the path: a presence that draws others, confidence carried lightly, light that is yours. Lead with the warmth. It is your practice.

Reversed. Spiritual insecurity under a confident front, or jealousy of others' light. You may be shrinking to fit a teacher's shape. The warmth is still yours; the fear is the problem.

a decision

Upright. Decide from confidence: you know your worth and what you want. The option that lets you be fully yourself. Lead with warmth.

Reversed. A choice made from insecurity or comparison, shrinking to fit. The confidence is still yours; the fear is making the decision.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “A dark woman, countrywoman, friendly, chaste, loving, honourable. If the card beside her signifies a man, she is well disposed towards him; if a woman, she is interested in the Querent. Also, love of money, or a certain success in business.”

Reversed: “Good, economical, obliging, serviceable. Signifies also--but in certain positions and in the neighbourhood of other cards tending in such directions--opposition, jealousy, even deceit and infidelity.”

The Wands throughout this suit are always in leaf, as it is a suit of life and animation. Emotionally and otherwise, the Queen's personality corresponds to that of the King, but is more magnetic.

Queen of Wands in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is your own confident warmth. You are leading this, whether or not you have the title, and people are drawn to your certainty. The reading is about using that well.

Reversed

At the heart of this is a confidence that has faltered or soured: doubt where there was certainty, or jealousy where there was generosity. The matter turns on recovering your own fire without taking anyone else's.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a strong, charismatic influence, perhaps a confident woman or a demand to lead. It may push you to show more of yourself than feels comfortable. Rise to it.

Reversed

The force across your path is jealousy or demand, someone's need to be first, or your own doubt dressed up as modesty. Until that is named, your warmth cannot do its work.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a confident, generous presence, a mentor or a time when you believed in yourself without reservation. That warmth is the ground beneath the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is a wound to confidence: jealousy suffered or felt, a time when you learned to shrink to keep the peace. The present carries that habit of dimming.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of confident leadership and warm success is receding. You have done the leading and the room has been won. The next stage asks something quieter of you.

Reversed

A stretch of self-doubt, jealousy or burnout is losing its hold. The fire is coming back. Do not apologise for it.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to lead with warmth and be yourself fully in doing it. That is within reach here and the circumstances welcome it. Take the throne without waiting to be asked.

Reversed

You may be aiming at being admired more than being effective, or hoping to lead without the risk of being seen. Make the goal about the work, and the confidence will follow.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A confident, generous influence is coming, perhaps a woman who takes you under her wing, or your own charisma stepping forward. Expect to be more visible, and more capable than you feared.

Reversed

You are heading into a stretch where confidence wobbles or where someone's jealousy complicates things. Keep your warmth and your boundaries; both will be tested.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are bold, warm and independent, and you know what you want. That self-possession is the gift you bring to this matter. Let it show.

Reversed

Part of you is doubting yourself or envying someone else's ease, and you may be making yourself smaller than you are. Sit back on the throne. The room has room for you.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you, often a confident and generous woman, is a strong ally and a model for how to carry yourself. The atmosphere favours boldness. Accept the encouragement.

Reversed

Someone in your circle is jealous or demanding, needing to be the centre and resenting your light. The atmosphere is competitive in an unkind way. Keep your fire and step out of the contest.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to be confident, warm and fully yourself, and to be loved for it. The fear underneath is of being too much. The card says you are not too much. You are the right amount.

Reversed

You fear being outshone or found wanting, and part of you may hope to avoid the spotlight entirely. Notice how much energy goes into comparison. Spend it on the sunflower instead.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in confident success: leadership recognised, warmth rewarded, your own vitality carrying the matter through. Keep the cat at your feet and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in confidence lost, jealousy souring a relationship, or your own light dimmed to keep others comfortable. The spread shows where you shrank. Stand up again and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A confident warmth is at work beneath this, yours or someone else's, drawing people toward a certainty they have not examined. The hidden influence is charisma. It is a real force; check where it is pointing.

Reversed

Beneath the surface is jealousy or self-doubt, a comparison being made in silence that is colouring everything. The hidden influence is a dimmed fire, someone making themselves smaller to keep the peace.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Lead with warmth and take the throne without waiting to be asked. Be fully yourself, say what you want plainly, and let your confidence make the room braver. Keep the cat at your feet.

Reversed

Stop comparing and stop shrinking. If jealousy is in the room, name what you actually need instead of resenting who has it. Sit back on the throne; there is room for you.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are confident, warm and magnetic, independent and glad to lead. Expect generosity and directness and a certain expectation of attention. They are a strong ally and a poor subordinate.

Reversed

They are struggling with self-doubt or jealousy and may be demanding or withdrawn as a result. Expect a need to be the centre, or a sudden dimming. Do not feed the comparison; see them plainly.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a warmth that makes you both bolder: you draw out each other's confidence and enjoy each other's light. The bond is generous. Keep it two suns, not one and a mirror.

Reversed

You are joined by a competition for the centre, or by one person's light and the other's shrinking. The fire has become unequal. Both of you can be bright; decide that together.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Attention divides you: one commands the room and the other feels unseen in it. Confidence on one side reads as dominance to the other. Share the throne, literally: let the quieter one lead something.

Reversed

Jealousy has opened the gap, or a confidence that curdled into demand. One of you is dimming and resenting it; the other may not have noticed. Say what you envy and what you need; both shrink when spoken.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the confident one: lead, be visible, want what you want out loud. It leads to success that is yours and warm enough to share. It asks you to tolerate being seen.

Reversed

This road competes for admiration or hides from it. It leads to jealousy or a dimmed life. Before you take it, make the goal about the work and the warmth, not the mirror.
