The image

A knight in armour decorated with salamanders rides a rearing horse across a desert, his staff raised and his yellow cloak flying. Pyramids stand in the distance. The horse's forelegs are off the ground and the rider is leaning into the motion, not back from it.

Upright meaning

The Knight of Wands is passion that has become movement. He does not plan much; he goes. In a reading the card shows bold action, travel or relocation, a charismatic and impatient person, a sudden departure or arrival, and the kind of energy that gets things started by sheer force. He is thrilling to be around and hard to rely on. When he turns up in your spread, something is about to move fast.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the horse bolts or refuses. The card shows impulsiveness that causes damage, anger that flares and does harm, a venture begun in haste and abandoned in frustration, or a person whose attention is in and out. It can also mark a journey or move that is delayed. The energy is still fierce; the question is who is holding the reins.

Knight of Wands: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Knight of Wands leans yes, on the strength of bold action and adventure, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
Knight of Wands reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but impulsiveness and recklessness delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Departure, absence, flight, emigration. A dark young man, friendly. Change of residence.”

Reversed: “Rupture, division, interruption, discord,”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

He is shewn as if upon a journey, armed with a short wand, and although mailed is not on a warlike errand. He is passing mounds or pyramids. The motion of the horse is a key to the character of its rider, and suggests the precipitate mood, or things connected therewith.

Knight of Wands in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is bold movement. You are acting, travelling or launching with real passion, and the horse is already off the ground. The reading is about steering at speed.

Reversed

At the heart of this is energy that has slipped its reins: impulsive moves, flashes of temper, or a passion that keeps starting and stopping. The matter turns on who is in control of the horse.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a forceful, impatient influence, perhaps a charismatic person pushing for action now. It may disrupt careful plans. It may also be the push you have needed.

Reversed

The force across your path is recklessness or anger, yours or someone else's, that keeps knocking things over. Until the temper is managed, nothing here stays built.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a bold move made with passion: a leap, a relocation, an adventure that set the present in motion. That daring is still the ground beneath this matter.

Reversed

At the root is an impulsive act that did damage, or a venture abandoned as quickly as it began. The present carries the aftermath of that unsteered energy.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of adventure and rapid action is receding. The charge is over and the dust is settling. What it started now needs a slower rider to finish.

Reversed

A stretch of recklessness, conflict or stop-start effort is losing its hold. The horse is calming. Let it, and do not kick it back into a gallop.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to act boldly and live with passion: to go, to leap, to be the one who moves. That is possible here and the moment favours it. Point the horse first.

Reversed

You may be aiming at excitement rather than achievement, wanting the rush more than the result. Make the goal one you would still want after the adrenaline fades.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A sudden move is coming: travel, a relocation, a dynamic person entering your life, or a decision to act that you will make quickly. Prepare to go.

Reversed

A delayed journey or a flare of conflict lies ahead. Someone's impatience, perhaps your own, will cause friction. Slow down before you make the move.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are fired up and ready to charge. That courage and drive serve this matter well, provided you glance at the map before you ride.

Reversed

Part of you is impatient, irritable and liable to act before thinking. Notice the heat before it becomes a decision. A night's sleep is not cowardice.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you is bold, charismatic and impatient, and is pushing things forward. The atmosphere is energetic and a little chaotic. Ride with it, but hold your own reins.

Reversed

Your surroundings are volatile: someone's temper, someone's recklessness, plans that change with every mood. Keep your footing and do not match the heat.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to act boldly and be carried by passion, and may fear that you will lose control of the ride. The card favours the leap. Keep one hand on the reins and go.

Reversed

You fear your own impulsiveness, or someone else's temper, and part of you may hope for a dramatic exit rather than a steady course. Notice that the fantasy of bolting is a wish to avoid the work.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in bold action taken and a move successfully made: a journey, a launch, a passionate decision that carries. Keep steering and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in a reckless move that misfires, a conflict that costs more than it wins, or a journey that stalls. The spread shows where the reins were dropped. Pick them up and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

Fast, passionate movement is building beneath the surface: a departure, a bold move, an impulse about to become action. The hidden influence is a horse already off the ground. Make sure you are steering it.

Reversed

Beneath this is impulsiveness or temper, an energy that has slipped its reins and is knocking things over out of sight. The hidden influence is heat without direction. Find the reins before it finds the furniture.

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Act boldly and go now, with passion and without over-planning. Point the horse at the destination, then ride; a glance at the map is enough. The moment rewards nerve.

Reversed

Stop before you act on the heat. Sleep on it, hold the reins, and let the impulse cool enough to aim. A night's delay is not cowardice; a reckless charge is not courage.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are bold, charismatic and impatient, moving fast and sweeping people along. Expect excitement and unreliability in equal measure. Ride with them when the destination matches yours; keep your own reins.

Reversed

They are impulsive, hot-tempered or in and out of your life as the mood takes them. Expect flashes of anger and departures without notice. Do not match the heat; wait for the horse to settle.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is adventure and passion: you move fast together, take leaps, keep each other's blood up. The bond is thrilling. Give it a destination so the energy does not burn itself out.

Reversed

You are joined by intensity that comes and goes, passion in bursts with little steadiness between. The horse keeps bolting and returning. Decide whether the ride is the relationship or an escape from one.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Tempo divides you: one charges and the other wants to look at the map, and the rider feels slowed while the planner feels run over. Both want to arrive. Agree the destination and the pace follows.

Reversed

Impulsiveness or temper has opened the gap: something said or done in heat, a departure without warning. The division is a dropped rein. Pick it up with an apology that does not explain itself away.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the charge: act with passion, move fast, make the bold move. It leads to adventure and change and asks you to steer at speed. It punishes hesitation and rewards nerve.

Reversed

This road is recklessness or a flight. It leads to damage or a journey that stalls. Before you take it, hold the reins for a day and see whether you still want to ride.
