The image

A king sits forward on a throne decorated with lions and salamanders, holding a tall sprouting staff and looking off to the side as if already planning the next move. A small salamander crawls at his feet. He is not relaxed; he is poised to stand.

Upright meaning

The King of Wands is fire that has learned to rule. He has the vision and the nerve to pursue it, and he can carry others with him because he means what he says. In a reading he shows entrepreneurial leadership, bold decisions made and owned, a mentor or boss who challenges you to be bigger, and the maturity to turn passion into a plan that others can follow. He sits forward because he is about to act.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the vision hardens and the king stops listening. The card shows leadership that has become domineering, decisions made in haste and defended out of pride, or a person whose confidence has outrun his competence. It can mark tyranny in small places, a boss or partner who cannot be told anything. Sometimes it is bluster covering doubt. The staff is still sprouting; the question is whether he will let anyone else hold it.

King of Wands: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
King of Wands leans yes, on the strength of vision and entrepreneurship, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
King of Wands reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but domineering and hasty delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Dark man, friendly, countryman, generally married, honest and conscientious. The card always signifies honesty, and may mean news concerning an unexpected heritage to fall in before very long.”

Reversed: “Good, but severe; austere, yet tolerant.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

The physical and emotional nature to which this card is attributed is dark, ardent, lithe, animated, impassioned, noble. The King uplifts a flowering wand, and wears, like his three correspondences in the remaining suits, what is called a cap of maintenance beneath his crown. He connects with the symbol of the lion, which is emblazoned on the back of his throne.

King of Wands in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is a mandate to lead. You have the vision and the authority, and the matter is yours to drive. The reading is about leading boldly without leaving people behind.

Reversed

At the heart of this is leadership gone rigid or hasty: a vision that will not bend, a decision made too fast, a refusal to hear objections. The matter turns on whether you can listen while you lead.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a forceful leader or a demand for bold decision. It may overwhelm a gentler approach. It may also be exactly the push that gets this moving.

Reversed

The force across your path is a domineering influence, someone in authority who will not be questioned, or your own tendency to bulldoze. Until that is checked, cooperation is impossible.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from strong, visionary leadership, perhaps a mentor or a time when you took charge boldly and it worked. That decisiveness is the ground beneath the present.

Reversed

At the root is an authority figure who was harsh or rigid, or a hasty decision of your own that you defended too long. The present carries the pattern of command without consultation.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of bold leadership and expansion is receding. The vision has been set in motion and the king has given his orders. The next stage is execution, which asks a different temperament.

Reversed

A stretch of domineering behaviour, your own or someone else's, is losing its hold. The tyranny is ending. Do not replace it with another.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to lead with vision and see it realised, to build something and own it. That is achievable here and the moment favours bold moves. Bring people with you.

Reversed

You may be aiming at control rather than leadership, wanting obedience more than results. Revise the goal so that it needs other people's ideas, not just their compliance.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A strong leader is about to influence your situation, or you are about to step into that role. Expect decisive action and a demand for boldness. Meet it.

Reversed

You are heading into a clash with someone domineering, or into a hasty decision you will have to defend. Slow the pace and gather the objections before you commit.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are visionary, decisive and ready to take charge. That authority is what the situation needs from you. Pair it with listening and it becomes leadership.

Reversed

Part of you is impatient with other views and tempted to simply decide for everyone. Notice when conviction becomes contempt. The staff grows better in shared hands.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you, often an older man or a person in charge, is a bold and generous leader who is backing you. The atmosphere is ambitious. Accept the challenge to be bigger.

Reversed

Someone in your circle, probably in a position of power, is rigid or tyrannical and will not hear dissent. The atmosphere is tense. Choose your battles and keep your own vision intact.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to lead something that matters and to be followed willingly. The fear underneath is of overreaching. The card says the reach is right if the listening keeps pace.

Reversed

You fear being dominated, or fear that your own authority will corrupt into bullying, and part of you may hope someone else will take the decision. Take it yourself, with counsel.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in bold, successful leadership: a vision realised, a venture carried through, authority earned and respected. Keep sitting forward and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in rigid command that alienates the people needed to succeed, or a hasty decision that unravels. The spread shows where listening stopped. Resume it and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A vision is shaping this from underneath, a larger plan held by someone with the nerve to pursue it, perhaps you. The hidden influence is leadership not yet declared. Declare it.

Reversed

Beneath the surface is a rigid will, a decision made in haste and defended out of pride, or an authority that has stopped listening. The hidden influence is command without consultation.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Lead with vision. Decide boldly, own the decision, and bring people with you by meaning what you say. Sit forward on the throne, and keep one ear open to the people on foot.

Reversed

Listen before you decide again. If you have been bulldozing, stop; if you have been deferring to someone who bulldozes, gather your objections and state them. Rigid vision breaks; shared vision bends and holds.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are a natural leader, visionary and decisive, used to being followed and generous when they are. Expect bold plans and a challenge to be bigger than you have been. Bring your own vision to the table.

Reversed

They are domineering or hasty, defending a decision because it is theirs rather than because it is right. Expect contempt for objections. Make your case with facts and choose your moment.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a shared vision and the nerve to pursue it: you build big things together and each trusts the other to lead when it is their turn. The bond is ambitious and generous.

Reversed

You are joined by one person's vision and the other's compliance, or by a rivalry over who leads. The throne has become a contest. Agree what you are building before you argue about who decides.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Leadership divides you: two visions, two kings, one throne. Each wants to decide and each reads the other's conviction as a challenge. Split the territory rather than the relationship.

Reversed

Domineering behaviour has opened the gap: a decision made for both of you, an objection waved away, a hasty move defended too long. The division is about being heard. Hear one thing fully and act on it.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the bold leadership one: set the vision, decide, build, bring others along. It leads to something realised and asks you to carry responsibility for it. Take it with your ears open.

Reversed

This road is command without counsel, or vision that will not bend. It leads to a venture that alienates the people it needs. Before you take it, collect the objections and let one change your mind.
