The image
A young page in a tunic patterned with salamanders stands in a desert landscape with pyramids in the distance, holding a tall staff and looking up at its sprouting tip as if it has just said something. His stance is open and eager. The land around him is dry and the staff is the only green thing in it.
Upright meaning
The Page of Wands is enthusiasm before experience. He has a new idea and wants to tell everyone, and his energy is contagious even when it is not yet useful. In a reading the card shows exciting news, a creative or adventurous impulse, a young or young-hearted person full of plans, and the willingness to try something simply because it sounds fun. It asks you to welcome the spark and to give it somewhere to go.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the enthusiasm has nowhere to land. The card shows restlessness, ideas that multiply without being tried, talk that substitutes for action, or news that disappoints. It can mark a person, or a part of you, that starts everything and finishes nothing, or a tantrum when the fun stops. The spark is real; it needs a task and a little patience.
Page of Wands: yes or no?
- Upright
- Yes
- Page of Wands leans yes, on the strength of enthusiasm and news, though it asks something of you in return.
- Reversed
- Not yet
- Page of Wands reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but restlessness and scattered ideas delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings
Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.
Upright: “Dark young man, faithful, a lover, an envoy, a postman. Beside a man, he will bear favourable testimony concerning him. A dangerous rival, if followed by the Page of Cups. Has the chief qualities of his suit. He may signify family intelligence.”
Reversed: “Anecdotes, announcements, evil news. Also indecision and the instability which accompanies it.”
From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot
Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.
In a scene similar to the former, a young man stands in the act of proclamation. He is unknown but faithful, and his tidings are strange.
Page of Wands in a spread
How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.
The Significator
What is at the heart of the matter right now?
At the centre of your situation is a fresh enthusiasm, a new idea or adventure you cannot stop talking about. You are the page with the sprouting staff. The reading is about turning talk into a first step.
At the heart of this is restlessness without direction: ideas everywhere and no follow-through. The matter turns on picking one spark and staying with it past the exciting part.
Crossing Card
What crosses, challenges or shapes it?
What meets your situation is a burst of new energy or an exciting message, possibly from a younger person. It may distract from steadier work. It may also be the fresh air the work needs.
The force across your path is scattered energy or unreliable enthusiasm, someone who talks big and does not deliver, or your own habit of chasing the next idea. Pin one thing down.
Foundation
What is the root of this?
This grew from a youthful enthusiasm, a time when you tried something because it excited you. That eager beginning is the ground under the present, and worth remembering when the work gets dull.
At the root is an enthusiasm that was never disciplined, or a project begun on a whim and abandoned. The present carries the pattern of brilliant starts and no middles.
Recent Past
What is passing out of the picture?
A period of excitement and fresh ideas is receding. The news has been delivered and the novelty has worn off. What follows asks for the patience the page did not have.
A stretch of restlessness, false enthusiasm or disappointing news is losing its hold. The scattered energy is settling into a direction. Stay with it.
Crown
What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?
What you consciously want is adventure, discovery, a project that feels like play. That is possible here and the circumstances welcome it. Give the goal a first concrete step.
You may be aiming at the thrill of beginnings without the commitment of middles, wanting novelty more than achievement. Choose a goal you would still want when it stops being new.
Future
What is coming next?
Exciting news or a fresh opportunity is coming, perhaps carried by a young person or arriving as a sudden idea. Say yes to it and act on it quickly before the spark cools.
A disappointing message or a stretch of unproductive restlessness lies ahead. Expect more talk than progress for a while. Protect one commitment from the churn.
Emotions
How are you meeting this, inside?
Inwardly, you are eager, curious and ready to try. That openness is your best contribution to this matter. Add a little patience and it becomes achievement.
Part of you is bored, impatient and hungry for the next thing. Notice that the restlessness is a way of avoiding the harder middle of what you have already begun.
External Forces
What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?
The people around you are lively and full of ideas, and the atmosphere favours experiment. Someone young or new may be bringing you good news. Enjoy the energy.
Your surroundings are noisy with plans that do not materialise. Someone may be promising more than they can deliver. Wait for action before you count on words.
Hopes & Desires
What do you hope for, and what do you fear?
You hope for a new adventure and may fear you will lose interest halfway, as before. Both tell you that you want the spark and distrust it. Trust it, and build a structure around it.
You fear bad news or your own inability to follow through, and part of you may hope to stay in the fun stage forever. Notice that wish; the middle is where the staff takes root.
Outcome
Where does all of this lead?
This resolves in a fresh start full of energy: good news, a new venture begun, enthusiasm that finds a task. Keep feeding it and it grows past the page stage.
Left as it is, this ends in talk and scattered beginnings, with the exciting idea never built. The spread shows where the follow-through was missing. Supply it and the ending changes.
Hidden Influences
What is at work here that you cannot see yet?
A fresh enthusiasm is stirring underneath, an idea you have not taken seriously yet because it sounds like fun. The hidden influence is a spark looking for a task. Give it one.
Beneath the surface is restlessness without direction, several exciting ideas and no middle to any of them. The hidden influence is a habit of brilliant starts. Notice it before you start again.
Advice
What should you do about it?
Say yes to the new idea and give it a first concrete step. Stay curious, stay eager, and add just enough patience to get past the exciting part. The spark needs a hearth, not a committee.
Pick one spark and stay with it past the point of boredom. The advice is to stop talking about plans and do a small piece of one; news and enthusiasm are not progress.
The Other Person
What are they bringing to this?
They are young in spirit, full of ideas and eager to share them, with more enthusiasm than follow-through so far. Expect good news, playful energy and some scattering. Give them a task, not a lecture.
They are restless and all talk at the moment, starting things and drifting, or bringing news that disappoints. Expect charm without delivery. Wait for action before you count on words.
What Joins You
What holds the two of you together?
What joins you is play: shared ideas, curiosity, a sense of adventure that keeps the bond fresh. It is lively and young whatever your ages. Give it a project so the play has somewhere to go.
You are joined by enthusiasm that never becomes anything, plans made together and never begun. The bond is fun and weightless. Build one small thing and it gains substance.
What Divides You
What pulls the two of you apart?
Temperament divides you: one is eager and scattered, the other wants follow-through. Playfulness on one side reads as flakiness to the other, and seriousness reads as a damper. Pair the spark with the structure.
Unreliability has opened the gap: promises made in excitement and not kept, or a restlessness that keeps leaving the other behind. The division is about follow-through. Ask for one kept promise.
A Path
What happens if you take this road?
This road is the adventure: try the new thing because it excites you, and learn as you go. It leads to discovery and asks a little discipline to carry it past the first thrill. It suits the curious.
This road is another beginning without a middle. It leads to scattered energy and a trail of half-started things. Choose it only if you commit to finishing this one.
