Sun–Mercury synastry

When one person’s Sun and the other’s Mercury are joined by a major aspect. It reads the same whichever person has which.

Conjunction (0°)

The two points together, blending.

One person’s Sun sits on the other’s Mercury, so the Mercury person tends to understand, describe and talk through what the Sun person is trying to do. Conversation often flows, and the Sun person may feel genuinely heard, even put into words, by the other. This is a good contact for planning, teaching, writing or problem-solving together. The trouble comes if the Mercury person becomes the permanent commentator: offering analysis when the Sun person wanted encouragement, or naming things too sharply. The Sun person may also dominate the conversation without noticing. Give the Mercury person room for their own ideas, not only for reflecting yours, and agree when you want advice and when you only want to be listened to.

Trine (120°) and sextile (60°)

Harmonious contacts: ease, or an opening that rewards effort.

Your Sun and their Mercury, or the reverse, sit in compatible signs, so ideas pass easily between you. The trine makes this effortless; the sextile rewards a little intention, such as setting time aside to talk. The Mercury person often offers useful words for the Sun person’s aims, and the Sun person tends to give the Mercury person’s thinking confidence and direction. Work projects, study and shared plans can benefit, as can ordinary chat over a meal. The easy flow can sometimes skim the surface, so important matters may be discussed lightly or not at all. Make room for harder conversations too, and notice whether you are both talking or one person is mostly nodding along.

Square (90°) and opposition (180°)

Challenging contacts: friction and attraction that ask for work.

When one person’s Sun and the other’s Mercury are at odds, the way one thinks may grate on the way the other expresses who they are. A square tends to produce snags in conversation that need working through; an opposition can make you feel like debating partners on opposite benches. The Mercury person may sound critical or nitpicking; the Sun person may sound dismissive or self-focused. Often the friction is about style rather than substance: pace, tone, or how much detail is wanted. The upside is sharper thinking. You test each other’s reasoning, and plans that survive your discussion are usually stronger. Slow down, repeat back what you heard, and assume good faith before reacting.
