Sun–Mars synastry

When one person’s Sun and the other’s Mars are joined by a major aspect. It reads the same whichever person has which.

Conjunction (0°)

The two points together, blending.

One person’s Mars sits on the other’s Sun, which tends to energise both of you. The Mars person pushes, challenges and spurs the Sun person on; the Sun person often gives the Mars person’s drive a direction and a reason. Shared projects, sport or any effort that needs momentum can thrive. In a close relationship the contact may add attraction and spark. The same charge can tip into competition or irritation, especially when both are tired or under pressure. The Mars person may feel they are always the one pushing, and the Sun person may feel pushed. Agree on shared goals, find physical outlets for surplus energy, and treat disagreements as problems to solve rather than fights to win.

Trine (120°) and sextile (60°)

Harmonious contacts: ease, or an opening that rewards effort.

Your Sun and their Mars, or the reverse, sit in compatible signs, so your energies tend to support one another. A trine makes working together feel natural; a sextile needs a deliberate shared aim to come alive. The Mars person often encourages the Sun person to act, and the Sun person tends to respect and steer the other’s initiative. This is useful for teams, households that need things done, and any friendship built on activity. In a close relationship it can add easy warmth and a sense of being on the same side. The danger is minor: you may push each other into too much at once. Pace yourselves, and check that both of you, not only the louder one, choose the direction.

Square (90°) and opposition (180°)

Challenging contacts: friction and attraction that ask for work.

When one person’s Sun and the other’s Mars are at odds, energy runs high and patience may run short. A square tends to produce sudden flashes of friction that demand action; an opposition can feel like a standing contest where each of you pushes against the other’s will. The Mars person may come across as aggressive or impatient; the Sun person may come across as proud or unwilling to give ground. In a close relationship there may be strong attraction alongside the arguments. This contact can also build real strength: you learn to assert yourselves honestly and to fight fair. Cool-down periods, clear turn-taking and shared physical activity help turn the heat into motivation rather than conflict.
