The image

A naked woman kneels at the edge of a pool under a great yellow star surrounded by seven smaller ones, pouring water from two jugs, one onto the land and one into the water. One foot rests on the surface of the pool without sinking. Behind her a bird perches in a tree on a green hill.

Upright meaning

The Star is what is left when the tower has fallen and the dust has cleared: nothing to hide, nothing to defend, and a sky full of light. The woman has no armour and needs none. In a reading the card shows hope, renewal, healing after crisis, faith in the future, generosity that flows without calculation, and the openness that becomes possible when there is nothing left to lose. She pours onto the land and the water both because she is not rationing. The card is a promise, and a quiet one.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the jugs run dry or the stars go behind cloud. The card shows discouragement, faith lost after too many disappointments, cynicism that protects against hope, a renewal that keeps not arriving, or a disconnection from the sources that used to refresh you. It can mark a person who has stopped looking up. The pool is still there. Kneel at it anyway; the water does not require belief.

The Star: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
The Star is a clear yes: hope and renewal are on your side.
Reversed
Not yet
The Star reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but discouragement and lost faith delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Loss, theft, privation, abandonment; another reading says-hope and bright prospects,”

Reversed: “Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A great, radiant star of eight rays, surrounded by seven lesser stars--also of eight rays. The female figure in the foreground is entirely naked. Her left knee is on the land and her right foot upon the water. She pours Water of Life from two great ewers, irrigating sea and land. Behind her is rising ground and on the right a shrub or tree, whereon a bird alights. The figure expresses eternal youth and beauty. The star is l'toile flamboyante, which appears in Masonic symbolism, but has been confused therein. That which the figure communicates to the living scene is the substance of the heavens and the elements. It has been said truly that the mottoes of this card are "Waters of Life freely" and "Gifts of the Spirit."

The summary of several tawdry explanations says that it is a card of hope. On other planes it has been certified as immortality and interior light. For the majority of prepared minds, the figure will appear as the type of Truth unveiled, glorious in undying beauty, pouring on the waters of the soul some part and measure of her priceless possession. But she is in reality the Great Mother in the Kabalistic Sephira Binah, which is supernal Understanding, who communicates to the Sephiroth that are below in the measure that they can receive her influx.

The Star in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is hope, honestly earned. You have come through something and the sky has cleared. The reading is about pouring freely rather than hoarding what you have left.

Reversed

At the heart of this is discouragement: a hope that has been disappointed too often, a faith that has gone quiet. The matter turns on finding the pool again and kneeling.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is an unexpected grace, a hope or a healing that interrupts your defences. It may feel undeserved. Accept it; it is not a transaction.

Reversed

The force across your path is cynicism or lost faith, in you or someone close to the matter. Nothing can refresh what refuses the water. Lower the guard a little.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a time of renewal and restored faith, a healing after a hard season that gave you a reason to keep going. That hope is the ground beneath the present.

Reversed

At the root is a disappointment that taught you not to hope, a star that seemed to fail. The present carries that defended heart.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of hope, healing and renewal is receding. The stars have done their work. What follows asks you to build with the faith they restored.

Reversed

A stretch of discouragement or cynicism is losing its hold. You are beginning to look up again. Keep looking.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is hope that lasts, a renewed life and a reason to trust the future. That is within reach here, and the circumstances are kinder than you expect. Keep pouring.

Reversed

You may be aiming at protection from disappointment rather than at hope itself, and calling it realism. Make the goal the water, not the armour.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A time of healing and renewed hope is coming. After whatever you have been through, the sky will clear and you will find yourself trusting again. Let it happen.

Reversed

You are heading into a stretch of discouragement or delayed renewal, when hope is hard to hold. Keep kneeling at the pool even when the stars seem dim. They are there.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are open, hopeful and generous, unguarded in the best sense. That faith is your gift to this matter, and to everyone near it.

Reversed

Part of you has decided that hoping is foolish, and is pouring the water back into the jug. Notice the decision. It was made in a storm and the storm has passed.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are hopeful and generous, and the atmosphere is one of healing and calm. Someone may be pouring water on your ground. Let them.

Reversed

Your surroundings are discouraged or cynical, with others who have stopped looking up and may try to talk you out of hope. Keep your own stars in view.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope, simply, and the hope itself is the message. The fear underneath is that hoping will be punished. The card says the sky is clear. Pour.

Reversed

You fear being disappointed again and may hope, quietly, to feel nothing so that nothing can hurt. That is not safety. Hope anyway; the water is cheaper than the wall.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in renewal: hope restored, healing complete, a future you can trust. Keep the jugs flowing and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in discouragement, a hope deferred until it is given up. The spread shows where the faith was lost. Return to the pool and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

Hope is at work beneath this, quieter than the worry on the surface. Something has already healed or is healing, and you have not yet let yourself trust it. The hidden influence is the clear sky behind the clouds you are watching.

Reversed

Below the surface is a loss of faith you have not admitted, a decision made after one disappointment too many to stop hoping. It is colouring everything. Notice that the choice was made in a storm.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Hope, openly. Lower the guard, pour freely onto land and water, and trust that the sky has cleared. Generosity without calculation is the method here; the stars reward the unarmoured.

Reversed

Stop pouring the water back into the jug. If you have decided hoping is foolish, revisit the decision; the storm it was made in has passed. Kneel at the pool even without belief.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are hopeful, open and generous, recovering from something and glad to be in the light. Expect warmth without agenda. Let them pour; it refreshes them as much as you.

Reversed

They have lost faith, in the future or in this, and are protecting themselves with cynicism. Expect guardedness that looks like indifference. Do not take the armour personally; it is old.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is renewal: you restore each other's faith and neither needs armour with the other. The bond is a clear sky after a storm you each came through. Keep the jugs flowing.

Reversed

You are joined by a disappointment you share, or by one person's hope carrying the other's cynicism. The well is running low on one side. Refill it before you measure the bond.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Hope divides you: one of you trusts the future and the other is braced against it, and each finds the other naive or bleak. Both have reasons. Name the storm each of you came from.

Reversed

Lost faith has opened the gap. Someone stopped believing in the two of you and has not said so, and the other feels the chill without knowing its source. Say it; hope can be rebuilt from honesty, not from silence.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the open one: hope, give freely, trust the renewal. It leads to healing and a future you can believe in, and asks you to walk it without armour. That is its cost and its gift.

Reversed

This road protects against disappointment by refusing to hope. It leads to a dry well and a dimmer sky. If you take it, know that the safety it offers is the safety of feeling less.
