The image

A full moon with a face looks down over a path that runs between two towers from a pool at the bottom of the picture toward distant mountains. A dog and a wolf howl up at the moon, and a crayfish crawls out of the water onto the path. Drops of light fall from the sky. No human figure is anywhere in the scene.

Upright meaning

The Moon is the night journey, when nothing looks like itself and you have to go on anyway. The path is there but dimly lit; the dog and the wolf, tamed and wild fear, howl together; the crayfish emerges from the deep of the pool, which is the deep of the mind. In a reading the card shows uncertainty, confusion, dreams and intuition, anxiety, deception or self-deception, and the need to trust a path you cannot fully see. It is uncomfortable and it is where the imagination lives.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the moon begins to set. The card shows confusion lifting, fears revealed as smaller than they seemed, a deception exposed, anxiety easing, or the dawn after a long night of not knowing. It can also mark the opposite, a refusal to face the dark at all, so that the crayfish stays in the pool. Mostly it means clarity is returning. Walk the path while there is still enough moonlight to see it.

work and career

Upright. Uncertainty: unclear direction, office politics, a job that is not what it seemed. Instinct is picking up what the facts have not confirmed. Do not sign anything in the fog.

Reversed. The fog lifting: a confusion resolving, a fear at work found to be only a fear, the real situation becoming plain. Anxiety eases as you see clearly. Act on the daylight.

money

Upright. Uncertainty about money: unclear figures, a deal that is not what it seems, fears larger than the facts. Do not sign anything in the fog. Wait for daylight.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Uncertainty: symptoms without a name, anxiety larger than the facts, sleep troubled by dreams. Do not make big decisions in the fog. Get the test, then wait for daylight.

Reversed. The fog lifting: a diagnosis clarifying, a fear found to be only a fear, anxiety easing. Trust what the daylight shows.

family and home

Upright. Uncertainty at home: mixed signals from a relative, a family situation that is not what it seems, fears larger than the facts. Do not make big decisions in the fog.

the spiritual path

Reversed. The fog lifting: illusion dissolving, a fear seen for what it was, the path visible again. Anxiety eases as clarity comes. Trust the daylight.

a decision

Upright. Do not decide in the fog. Facts are unclear, fears are loud, something is not what it seems. Wait for daylight, then choose.

Reversed. The fog is lifting: the real shape of the options becomes clear, a fear turns out to be only a fear. Decide on what the daylight shows.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Hidden enemies, danger, calumny, darkness, terror, deception, occult forces, error.”

Reversed: “Instability, inconstancy, silence, lesser degrees of deception and error.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

The distinction between this card and some of the conventional types is that the moon is increasing on what is called the side of mercy, to the right of the observer. It has sixteen chief and sixteen secondary rays. The card represents life of the imagination apart from life of the spirit. The path between the towers is the issue into the unknown. The dog and wolf are the fears of the natural mind in the presence of that place of exit, when there is only reflected light to guide it.

The last reference is a key to another form of symbolism. The intellectual light is a reflection and beyond it is the unknown mystery which it cannot shew forth. It illuminates our animal nature, types of which are represented below--the dog, the wolf and that which comes up out of the deeps, the nameless and hideous tendency which is lower than the savage beast. It strives to attain manifestation, symbolized by crawling from the abyss of water to the land, but as a rule it sinks back whence it came. The face of the mind directs a calm gaze upon the unrest below; the dew of thought falls; the message is: Peace, be still; and it may be that there shall come a calm upon the animal nature, while the abyss beneath shall cease from giving up a form.

The Moon in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is uncertainty. You cannot see clearly and you are walking anyway, between the dog and the wolf. The reading is about trusting the path and your own deep knowing, not the shapes in the dark.

Reversed

You are at the point where confusion begins to clear. The moon is setting and the towers are becoming plain shapes. The matter is about acting on the clarity as it comes.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is fog: confusion, hidden factors, fears that distort what you see. It is the real obstacle. Move slowly and trust what you sense over what you imagine.

Reversed

The force across your path is a clarity you may not want, a deception coming to light or a fear exposed as hollow. It unsettles. It also ends the night.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a time of uncertainty, dreams and deep intuition, a night journey that shaped how you see. That dim, imaginative ground is the base beneath the present.

Reversed

At the root is an illusion that was dispelled or a fear that was faced, a dawn after a long dark. The present stands on that clarity, even if the night has returned.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of confusion, anxiety or walking blind is receding. The moon is setting and the path is becoming visible. You came through it.

Reversed

A stretch of emerging clarity or of a revealed deception is settling into the past. The illusion is gone. Do not go looking for a new one.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to see clearly, to know what is real. The moon will not give you that yet. Aim instead at trusting your deepest sense and taking the next step on the path.

Reversed

You consciously want the confusion to end and the truth to come out. That aim is sound and the reading supports it. Be ready for the truth to be plainer than the fear.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A period of uncertainty is ahead, when things will not be what they seem and anxiety will run ahead of facts. Trust your intuition more than your imagination. Keep walking.

Reversed

Clarity is coming. A confusion will resolve, a fear will shrink, a hidden thing will be revealed. Expect relief, and act on what the dawn shows.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are anxious, imaginative and attuned to things you cannot name. Your intuition is reliable here; your fear is not. Learn to tell them apart by their voice.

Reversed

Part of you is beginning to see clearly and part prefers the drama of the dark. Lean toward the first. The towers are only towers.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The situation around you is murky, with hidden motives or information you do not have, and others as uncertain as you are. The atmosphere is dreamlike. Verify before you act, and trust your gut.

Reversed

Your surroundings are clearing: a deception is being exposed, confusion is lifting in the group. The environment now favours plain speech. Join it.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You fear what is hiding in the dark and hope for a light to show you the way. The card says the light is dim and the path is real. Hope for the courage to walk it anyway.

Reversed

You hope for clarity and may fear it, since the truth might be less interesting than the mystery. Notice that attachment to the night. The dawn is kinder than it looks.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

Left as it is, this ends in continued uncertainty: a path walked in the dark, fears unresolved, the truth still hidden. The spread shows where imagination replaced perception. Trust the deeper sense and the ending changes.

Reversed

This resolves in clarity: confusion dispelled, a hidden thing revealed, fears found smaller in daylight. Keep walking toward the mountains and the result holds.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

What is hidden here is genuinely hidden: motives, facts or feelings you cannot yet see, and your imagination is filling the gaps with shapes. Trust the deep sense in you over the pictures the fear draws.

Reversed

Beneath the surface a confusion is starting to clear, or a deception is about to come to light. The hidden influence is the dawn. Wait for it before you act on what the dark showed you.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Go slowly and trust your intuition more than your imagination. Verify what can be verified, and for the rest, follow the path between the towers without insisting on seeing the end of it. Fear is not information.

Reversed

Let the clarity come. Stop feeding the drama of not knowing; the moon is setting and the shapes are only towers. Act on what the daylight shows and not on what the night suggested.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are uncertain, anxious or not fully showing themselves, and may not know their own mind yet. Expect fog and mixed signals that are not deception, only confusion. Do not fill in their blanks for them.

Reversed

Their confusion is lifting, or something they hid is surfacing. Expect a clearer, plainer person than the one you have been dealing with. Meet the daylight version of them.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is the imagination you share: dreams, intuitions, a willingness to walk in the dark together. The bond lives partly in what is unseen. Keep checking that you are seeing the same shapes.

Reversed

You are joined by a mutual confusion, or by an illusion one of you has maintained about the other. The moon is setting on it. What remains in daylight is the real bond, or its absence.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Uncertainty divides you: one of you sees shapes in the dark that the other cannot, and fear on one side reads as paranoia to the other. Neither can prove anything yet. Agree to wait for the light together.

Reversed

A revealed illusion has opened the gap: a deception come to light, or a fear exposed as hollow. The division is about what to do now that you can see. Daylight is kinder than it looks.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road goes through the dark: uncertainty, intuition, a path you cannot see the end of. It leads somewhere real and asks you to trust your deeper sense while fear howls. Walk it slowly.

Reversed

This road waits for clarity before committing, or stays in the dark because the mystery is more interesting than the facts. As clarity arrives it becomes the right road; as a hiding place it leads nowhere.
