The image

In the courtyard of an old house, a larger child hands a cup filled with a white flower to a smaller one. Four more flower-filled cups stand around them and a sixth sits on a pedestal. The scene is golden and still, and a guard walks away in the background, leaving the children in peace.

Upright meaning

The Six of Cups is the past as a gift rather than a weight. It shows memory, childhood, old friends, the places you came from and the simple generosity that children manage before they learn to keep score. In a reading it can mean a reunion, a kindness given with no strings, a return to something you loved, or a time when innocence is restored. It asks you to receive the flower, not to analyse it.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, nostalgia becomes a place to hide. The past is idealised until the present cannot compete, or an old pattern is repeated because it is familiar. The card can show naivety that will be exploited, a refusal to grow up, or a childhood issue that still runs the show. The flower in the cup was lovely, but it was given to a child. Ask what the adult you are now actually needs.

Six of Cups: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Six of Cups leans yes, on the strength of nostalgia and childhood, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
Six of Cups reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but living in the past and naivety delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Six of Cups by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. Nostalgia, sweetness, kindness without agenda. An old flame returning, or a relationship that feels like coming home. Simple gestures matter most here; do them.

Reversed. Living in the past: comparing every new person to an old love, or a relationship kept alive by memory alone. The golden age was also just a time. Let the present be the present.

work and career

Upright. A return to something you loved: an old colleague, a former employer, a skill from your early days. Kindness and simplicity at work. Sometimes the right next job is the one you had before.

Reversed. Living in the past: comparing every job to the good old days, clinging to how things used to be done. Nostalgia is not a strategy. Let the present workplace be the present.

money

Upright. Money with a memory: an inheritance, a gift from the past, help from family, an old client returning. Kindness and simplicity in financial matters. Accept the gift.

Reversed. Living off the past: old money, old habits, comparing every budget to the good years. Nostalgia is not a plan. Let the present accounts be the present.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Comfort and kindness: simple pleasures, childhood foods, the healing of being gentle with yourself. Give the child the flower. Rest is allowed to be sweet.

Reversed. Living on past health, or nostalgia for a body you no longer have. The golden age was also just a time. Care for the body you have now.

family and home

Upright. Childhood, memory, home as it was: visiting old places, reconnecting with family, kindness passed down. Simple gestures matter most. Give the child the flower.

Reversed. Living in the family's past: old roles replayed, grievances kept alive, a home that exists only in memory. Let the present household be the present.

personal growth

Upright. Kindness to your younger self: memory, innocence, simple pleasures revisited. Healing often looks like this. Give the child the flower.

Reversed. Living in the past: nostalgia as refuge, old stories replayed, an innocence you refuse to outgrow. The golden age was also just a time. Let the present be the present.

the spiritual path

Upright. Innocence revisited: kindness to the child you were, memory as a source of grace, simple devotions. Healing often looks like this. Give the child the flower.

Reversed. Nostalgia for a faith you have outgrown, old devotions replayed as refuge. The golden age was also just a time. Let the present practice be the present.

a decision

Upright. The option from the past: an old path, a familiar comfort, a return. Kindness and simplicity favoured. Sometimes the right choice is the one you had before.

Reversed. Nostalgia deciding for you: choosing what used to work rather than what works now. Let the present options be the present.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “A card of the past and of memories, looking back, as--for example--on childhood; happiness, enjoyment, but coming rather from the past; things that have vanished. Another reading reverses this, giving new relations, new knowledge, new environment, and then the children are disporting in an unfamiliar precinct.”

Reversed: “The future, renewal, that which will come to pass presently.”

Six of Cups in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is the past: a memory, a person from long ago, a return to where you started. Something old is offering you something simple and good.

Reversed

You are standing in old territory and finding it hard to leave. The matter at hand is being seen through a childhood lens, and that lens is distorting what is in front of you.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a pull back toward what was: an old friend, a former home, a familiar way of doing things. It can comfort or distract. Take the gift without moving in.

Reversed

The force across your path is nostalgia that has outstayed its welcome, or a childhood habit that keeps repeating. Until you name the old pattern, the present cannot get a fair hearing.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from childhood, family or early friendship, and from a kindness received long ago that still shapes you. The present matter rests on that gentle beginning, and remembering it helps.

Reversed

At the root is a childhood pattern that has never been examined: a role in the family, an early loss, a way of pleasing that you learned before you could choose. It is still steering.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of looking backward, of reunions and reminiscence, is receding. You have visited the old house and it has given you what it could. The next stage faces forward.

Reversed

A time of being stuck in the past or acting from old wounds is losing its hold. The childhood story is finishing. You are stepping out of the courtyard.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is a return to simplicity, innocence and easy affection, perhaps a reunion or a rekindled friendship. It is achievable, if you bring the adult along.

Reversed

You may be aiming for a past that cannot be recovered, hoping to make now feel like then. Notice that the goal keeps you looking over your shoulder. Set one in front of you.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

Someone or something from your past is about to reappear: an old friend, a former place, a childhood pleasure. Receive it as the gift it is, and let it refresh rather than replace the present.

Reversed

You are heading into a stretch where old patterns tempt you, or where a return to the past disappoints. Enjoy the memory and keep your feet in the present.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inside, you are open, generous and a little tender, able to give without keeping accounts. That childlike quality is a strength in this matter, as long as it stays paired with judgement.

Reversed

Your inner response is coloured by old feelings, perhaps a wish to be looked after or a reluctance to take adult responsibility for the situation. Ask who is reacting: the child or the grown-up.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are kind in a simple, uncomplicated way. Family, old friends or someone from your past is offering warmth and goodwill. Your surroundings favour reconciliation and ease.

Reversed

Your surroundings are stuck in old roles. Family or long-standing friends may be treating you as you were rather than as you are, and you may be obliging them. Gently refuse the old part.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to recover something simple and good from the past, or to find that kind of innocence again. The fear underneath is that it is gone for good. The card suggests it survives in a different form.

Reversed

You fear being trapped by your history, or that you will never grow beyond an old pattern. There may also be a hidden wish to stay small and be taken care of. Notice both before you act.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in a renewal of old affection: a reunion, a reconciliation with your past, a return of simple joy. Accept what is offered and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends with you repeating an old pattern or living in a memory while the present passes. The spread shows where the past took the wheel. Take it back and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

The past is at work beneath this: a memory, an old kindness, a childhood pattern shaping how you see the present. The hidden influence is nostalgia, and it is sweeter than it is accurate.

Reversed

Beneath the surface a childhood role is still running, a way of pleasing or needing learned before you could choose. The hidden influence is the child, steering the adult's decision.

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Receive the gift from the past without moving back into it. Let the memory or the old friend refresh you, take the simple kindness, and keep your feet in the present. Enjoy the courtyard; do not live there.

Reversed

Ask who is reacting, the child or the grown-up, and let the grown-up decide. The advice is to stop measuring now against then, and to refuse the old role others keep offering you.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are kind in a simple, open way, generous without keeping accounts, and perhaps a figure from your past returning. Expect warmth and innocence. Receive it as it is meant.

Reversed

They are stuck in old patterns, treating you as you were or themselves as they were, or lost in nostalgia for something that cannot come back. Expect sentiment where decisions are needed. Gently refuse the old part.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is history and simple affection: shared memories, old kindnesses, a bond that feels like coming home. It is sweet and it is real. Add something new to it now and then.

Reversed

You are joined by the past more than the present, by who you were to each other rather than who you are. The courtyard is the relationship. Step out of it together and see if the bond comes too.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

The past divides you: one keeps returning to it and the other wants to live now. Nostalgia on one side feels like avoidance to the other; forward motion feels like forgetting. Honour the memory and make a new one.

Reversed

An old role has opened the gap: one of you is still being treated, or behaving, as the child or the elder you once were. The division is a pattern from before the relationship. Name it and both of you can step out of it.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road returns to something from the past: a person, a place, a simpler way. It leads to renewal if you bring the present with you and to a pleasant trap if you do not. Visit; do not move in.

Reversed

This road repeats an old pattern because it is familiar. It leads where it led before. Before you take it, ask what the adult you are now actually needs.
