The image
A dark silhouetted figure stands before seven cups floating in a cloud. Each cup holds something different: a head, a veiled glowing figure, a serpent, a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath, and a dragon. The figure's arm is raised, uncertain which to reach for, and none of the prizes can be held while they remain in the cloud.
Upright meaning
The Seven of Cups is the pleasure of possibility and the trap inside it. Every cup promises something, and as long as you are only looking, you can have them all. The moment you choose, the others vanish, which is why the figure stands so long with the arm raised. In a reading it shows daydreams, options multiplying, a vivid imagination running ahead of action, and sometimes a temptation that looks better in the cloud than it would in the hand.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the cloud thins and the cups come down to earth. You see which prizes were illusions and which one you actually want, and you choose. The card shows clarity after confusion, a decision made, the end of wishful thinking, and a return to practical commitment. It can also mark the slightly flat feeling that follows, when the dream becomes a plan with a to-do list attached.

work and career
Upright. Too many options, or a fantasy of a career instead of the work it would take. Choice paralysis, pretty plans, nothing chosen. Pick one cup and find out what is in it.
Reversed. Clarity: you know which path you want and which were illusions. A decision about your work becomes possible. Act on it before the fog returns.
money
Upright. Too many financial options, or a fantasy of wealth instead of the work of it. Schemes, daydreams, nothing chosen. Pick one cup and find out what is in it.

family and home
Upright. Too many options for the family, or a fantasy of home instead of the one you have. Dreams of the perfect house, the perfect relatives. Choose something real to want.

Waite’s divinatory meanings
Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.
Upright: “Fairy favours, images of reflection, sentiment, imagination, things seen in the glass of contemplation; some attainment in these degrees, but nothing permanent or substantial is suggested.”
Reversed: “Desire, will, determination, project.”

Strange chalices of vision, but the images are more especially those of the fantastic spirit.
Seven of Cups in a spread
How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.
The Significator
What is at the heart of the matter right now?
At the centre of your situation is a choice you have not made, surrounded by appealing possibilities. You are living in the options rather than in any one of them. The reading will keep asking which cup you mean.
You are at the point of choosing, or have just chosen, after a stretch of drifting among possibilities. The matter at hand is about making one dream real and letting the others go.
Crossing Card
What crosses, challenges or shapes it?
What meets your situation is too many options, or a fantasy that keeps pulling your attention from the task in front of you. Imagination is the force here, and it needs a decision to make it useful.
The force across your path is a demand for clarity: circumstances or a person insisting that you stop browsing and commit. It feels like pressure. It is also the way out of the cloud.
Foundation
What is the root of this?
This grew out of a time of dreaming and open possibility, perhaps a period when you refused to narrow your options. The present matter rests on choices you kept postponing.
At the root is a hard choice you once made clearly, cutting away other possibilities to commit. That earlier decision is the base here, and its discipline is available to you again.
Recent Past
What is passing out of the picture?
A period of indecision, fantasy or scattered wanting is receding. The cups are drifting away whether you chose or not. What remains is whichever one you actually reached for.
A recent moment of clarity, when you cut through confusion and decided, is settling into the past. The choice is made. Stop reopening it.
Crown
What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?
What you consciously hope for is to have it all, or at least to keep every door open. That hope is pleasant and it is the thing blocking you. Aim at one cup.
You consciously want clarity: to know what you want and to pursue it without second-guessing. That aim is right and this reading says it is within reach once you stop looking at the cloud.
Future
What is coming next?
A spread of options is coming, more than you expected and not all of them real. Enjoy the imagining, then test each prize by asking what it would cost to hold.
A decision is approaching that will clear away confusion. You will see which choices were illusions. Expect relief, and a little grief for the dreams you set down.
Emotions
How are you meeting this, inside?
Inside, you are dreaming more than deciding. Your imagination is vivid and it is also a way of not committing. Ask yourself which of the cups you would still want if it were the only one.
Your inner state is settling toward clarity. You are becoming able to tell wish from want, and that discernment is exactly what this situation has been missing.
External Forces
What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?
The people around you are full of ideas, schemes and promises, and not all of them are grounded. Someone may be offering you something that looks better than it is. Check what is in the cup before you drink.
Your surroundings are becoming more realistic and less dreamy. People around you are making decisions, and their clarity will help you make yours. The atmosphere now favours practical choice.
Hopes & Desires
What do you hope for, and what do you fear?
You hope that a perfect option will present itself so that you never have to give anything up. You fear choosing wrong. Both keep the arm raised. The cards suggest choosing is the only way to find out.
You hope for the relief of a clear decision and may fear the dullness that follows once the dreaming stops. Notice that the fear is of ordinary life, which is where the real cup is.
Outcome
Where does all of this lead?
Left as it is, this ends in drift: options enjoyed and none taken, or a tempting illusion chosen over a plainer good. The spread shows where you stopped deciding. Reach for a cup and the ending changes.
This resolves in clarity and a committed choice. The fog clears, the illusions fall away, and you act on the one thing you actually want. Hold to it and the result follows.
Hidden Influences
What is at work here that you cannot see yet?
Imagination is running this from underneath: options multiplying, a fantasy you have not tested, a wish being mistaken for a plan. The hidden influence is the cloud the cups are floating in. Nothing in it can be held.
Beneath the surface a decision is forming and the illusions are thinning. The hidden influence is clarity arriving; you already know which cup you want and have not admitted it.
Advice
What should you do about it?
Test each prize by asking what it would cost to hold. Enjoy the imagining, then choose one cup and let the others vanish; they vanish anyway the moment you reach. Deciding is the only way out of the cloud.
Act on the clarity you have. Stop reopening the choice and stop mourning the dreams you set down. The advice is to commit and then to do the ordinary work the dream has become.
The Other Person
What are they bringing to this?
They are full of possibilities and short on decisions, dreaming vividly and committing to nothing yet. Expect plans that shift and promises that float. Ask which cup they would still want if it were the only one.
They are coming to a decision after a long drift, seeing which options were illusions. Expect clarity and a flat patch afterwards. Support the choice rather than reopening the menu.
What Joins You
What holds the two of you together?
What joins you is a shared imagination, dreams spun together and options you enjoy weighing. The bond is vivid and not yet grounded. Pick one cup together and see if it still holds you.
You are joined by a decision made or being made, by having cut through the fantasy together to something real. The bond has come down from the cloud. Build on it.
What Divides You
What pulls the two of you apart?
Indecision divides you: one wants to keep all options open and the other wants a choice made. Dreaming on one side feels like evasion; deciding feels like a cage. Set a date for the choice and keep it.
An illusion dispelled has opened the gap: one of you saw the other, or the relationship, more clearly and the picture changed. The division is the loss of a fantasy. What remains in plain light is the real question.
A Path
What happens if you take this road?
This road is the one you keep imagining and not taking. It leads nowhere while it stays in the cloud, and somewhere real the moment you commit. Take it only if you are reaching, not browsing.
This road is the clear choice: pick the cup, let the rest vanish, do the work. It leads to something you can hold and asks you to mourn the options you did not take. It is the grounded road.
