The image

An angel with red wings emerges from clouds blowing a trumpet with a white banner marked by a red cross. Below, grey figures rise from open coffins floating on water, a man, a woman and a child in front and more behind, all with arms raised toward the sound. Icy mountains stand on the horizon.

Upright meaning

Judgement is the call you have been waiting for, even if you did not know it. The dead rise not because they are condemned but because they are summoned, and the raised arms are recognition, not fear. In a reading the card shows awakening, a calling, a decisive evaluation of the past that frees you to move, forgiveness, rebirth, and the moment when you finally hear what your life has been asking of you. The trumpet is loud because it has to be.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the figures stay in their coffins. The card shows a call ignored, self-judgement so harsh it prevents rising, hesitation at the moment of decision, a reckoning refused, or a fear of being evaluated that keeps you lying down. It can mark a person who hears the trumpet and pretends not to. The angel has not stopped blowing. Stand up; the verdict is kinder than the one you have been passing on yourself.

Judgement: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Judgement leans yes, on the strength of awakening and a calling, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
Judgement reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but self-doubt and ignoring the call delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Judgement by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. A reckoning in love: a clear-eyed look at what a relationship has been and a decision about what it will be. Forgiveness, a second chance, or a definite goodbye. You already know which; the card asks you to answer.

Reversed. Avoiding the verdict. Doubt and self-criticism keep you from deciding whether to stay or go, or from accepting a chance to begin again. The call has come; hesitating is also an answer.

work and career

Upright. A reckoning: a clear look at your career so far and a decision about what it will be. A calling heard, a change of direction answered. You already know; the card asks you to say so.

Reversed. Avoiding the verdict: doubt and self-criticism keep you from a change you know is right, or from accepting a chance to begin again. Hesitating is also an answer.

money

Upright. A financial reckoning: an honest look at where your money has gone and a decision about where it will go. A fresh start, a debt faced, a calling answered despite the cost. You already know; the card asks you to say so.

Reversed. Avoiding the verdict: refusing to look at the numbers, hesitating over a decision that is overdue. Hesitating is also a choice, and it is costing you.

health and wellbeing

Upright. A reckoning with your health: a clear look at how you have lived in your body and a decision about how you will. A wake-up call answered. You already know; the card asks you to act.

Reversed. Ignoring the wake-up call, or judging yourself too harshly to change. Hesitating is also a choice. Stand up when the trumpet sounds.

family and home

Upright. A family reckoning: an honest look at what the household has been and a decision about what it will be. Forgiveness, a second chance, or a definite goodbye. You already know which.

Reversed. Avoiding the verdict: refusing to look at a family truth, hesitating over a decision that is overdue. Hesitating is also an answer.

personal growth

Upright. A reckoning with yourself: a clear look at who you have been and a decision about who you will be. Forgiveness, a calling, a second chance answered. You already know; the card asks you to say so.

Reversed. Self-judgement without mercy, or a call ignored because answering would mean changing. Hesitating is also an answer. Stand up when the trumpet sounds.

the spiritual path

Upright. The call: awakening, a summons from above, the dead rising to a new life. Forgiveness, reckoning, a vocation answered. You already hear the trumpet; the card asks you to stand.

Reversed. A call refused, or self-judgement so harsh you cannot rise. Hesitating is also an answer. Stand up when the trumpet sounds.

a decision

Upright. You already know. This is a reckoning, a call to answer, a decision whose verdict you have been carrying. Say it out loud and stand up.

Reversed. Avoiding the verdict: doubt and self-criticism keep you from a decision that is overdue. Hesitating is also a choice, and the worse one.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Change of position, renewal, outcome. Another account specifies total loss though lawsuit.”

Reversed: “Weakness, pusillanimity, simplicity; also deliberation, decision, sentence.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

I have said that this symbol is essentially invariable in all Tarot sets, or at least the variations do not alter its character. The great angel is here encompassed by clouds, but he blows his bannered trumpet, and the cross as usual is displayed on the banner. The dead are rising from their tombs--a woman on the right, a man on the left hand, and between them their child, whose back is turned. But in this card there are more than three who are restored, and it has been thought worth while to make this variation as illustrating the insufficiency of current explanations. It should be noted that all the figures are as one in the wonder, adoration and ecstacy expressed by their attitudes. It is the card which registers the accomplishment of the great work of transformation in answer to the summons of the Supernal--which summons is heard and answered from within. Herein is the intimation of a significance which cannot well be carried further in the present place. What is that within us which does sound a trumpet and all that is lower in our nature rises in response--almost in a moment, almost in the twinkling of an eye? Let the card continue to depict, for those who can see no further, the Last judgment and the resurrection in the natural body; but let those who have inward eyes look and discover therewith. They will understand that it has been called truly in the past a card of eternal life, and for this reason it may be compared with that which passes under the name of Temperance.

Judgement in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is a summons. Something is calling you to rise, to account for the past and to step into a new stage. The reading is about answering.

Reversed

At the heart of this is a call you are not answering, or a judgement of yourself so severe that you cannot get up. The matter turns on hearing the trumpet as invitation rather than sentence.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a reckoning, a demand to evaluate what has been and decide what will be. It interrupts. It is also the moment the coffins open.

Reversed

The force across your path is hesitation or self-doubt, a verdict you refuse to face or a call you keep deferring. Until you stand, nothing here can begin.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from an awakening, a moment of reckoning or a call answered that set your life on its present course. That rising is the ground beneath the matter.

Reversed

At the root is a call ignored or a harsh judgement internalised, a time when you stayed in the coffin. The present carries that unanswered trumpet.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of reckoning and awakening is receding. The call has been heard and answered; the figures are standing. What follows is the life you rose into.

Reversed

A stretch of hesitation or self-condemnation is losing its hold. The verdict you passed on yourself is being overturned. Accept the appeal.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is a clear sense of purpose and the freedom that comes from settling accounts with the past. That is within reach here, and the call is already sounding. Aim at rising.

Reversed

You may be aiming at absolution without the reckoning, or at a certainty that will never come before you stand. Make the goal the answer, not the perfect readiness.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A call is coming, a moment of awakening or decisive evaluation that will ask you to rise and move. You will recognise it. Answer it when it sounds.

Reversed

You are heading into a stretch of doubt or hesitation at a moment that asks for decision. Decide in advance that you will stand when the trumpet sounds, however you feel.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are ready to be called, to account for yourself and to begin again. That readiness is your strength here. Raise your arms.

Reversed

Part of you is judging yourself more harshly than any angel would, and using the verdict as a reason to stay down. Appeal it. The sentence was never yours to pass.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are also rising, called to something larger, and the atmosphere is one of awakening and collective purpose. Join the figures with raised arms.

Reversed

Your surroundings are hesitant or stuck in old judgements, with people refusing a call that is plainly sounding. Do not wait for the group to rise. Stand first.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to find your purpose and be forgiven the past, and fear being judged and found wanting. The card says the judgement is a summons, not a sentence. Hope for the trumpet.

Reversed

You fear evaluation so much that you may hope the call never comes, or hope to be excused from rising. There is no excuse and no need for one. Stand.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in awakening: a call answered, the past accounted for, a new life begun. Keep your arms raised and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends with the call unanswered and the coffin lid kept shut by your own judgement. The spread shows where you stopped listening. Hear it and the ending changes.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A call is sounding beneath the surface and part of you has already heard it. Something is asking you to rise, account for the past and begin a new stage. The hidden influence is a summons you have not yet answered aloud.

Reversed

Beneath this is a harsh judgement you have passed on yourself, keeping you in the coffin while the trumpet sounds. The hidden influence is self-condemnation dressed as humility. Appeal the verdict.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Answer the call. Rise, settle accounts with the past, forgive what needs forgiving, and step into the new stage. The reckoning is an invitation, not a sentence.

Reversed

Stop judging yourself more harshly than any angel would. The advice is to stand up anyway, however unready you feel. Hesitation here is the only real failure.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are at a turning point, awakening to something and ready to rise. Expect decisiveness, a reckoning with their past, and a new purpose. Join them with your arms raised or step aside; the trumpet is for them.

Reversed

They hear the call and are not answering, held down by self-doubt or by a verdict they passed on themselves long ago. Expect hesitation at the moment that asks for decision. You cannot stand up for them.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a shared awakening: you were called to the same thing, or you rose together from the same past. The bond has purpose in it. That purpose is what to protect.

Reversed

You are joined by a call neither of you has answered, or by old judgements you keep passing on each other. The coffins are open and you are both still lying down. One of you stands first.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Different callings divide you: each of you has heard a trumpet and the two are not sounding the same note. Both are real. Decide whether the roads run together or apart, honestly.

Reversed

Judgement has opened the gap: a verdict one of you passed on the other, or on yourself, that keeps a new beginning from starting. The division ends with forgiveness, which is different from forgetting.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the answer to the call: rise, reckon with the past, begin the new stage. It leads to rebirth and asks you to be evaluated and to accept the result. It is the road with your arms raised.

Reversed

This road stays in the coffin: hesitate, judge yourself, wait until you feel ready. It leads nowhere, because readiness arrives after standing, not before. Take the other road.
