Numerology guide

Numerology treats numbers as symbols. Modern Western numerology grew out of early twentieth-century writers who drew loosely on older ideas about number, often credited to Pythagoras; there is no evidence that he taught anything like it. Read it the way you would read a card or a rune: a prompt for reflection, not a measurement of who you are.

How the numbers are worked out here

  • Reducing. Add the digits until one remains: 1987 becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, then 2 + 5 = 7. For the core numbers, 11, 22 and 33 are kept as master numbers instead of being reduced to 2, 4 and 6.
  • Life Path. Month, day and year are each reduced first, then added and reduced. For 29 November 1987: 11 + 11 + 7 = 29, so 11. Adding all the digits at once can give a different answer; this is the method most authors use.
  • Letters. A, J, S are 1; B, K, T are 2; C, L, U 3; D, M, V 4; E, N, W 5; F, O, X 6; G, P, Y 7; H, Q, Z 8; I, R 9. Accents are removed and other characters ignored. Use your full name as it was at birth.
  • Expression, Soul Urge and Personality come from all the letters, the vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and the consonants. Y is counted as a consonant; some authors count it as a vowel when it sounds like one.
  • Personal Year is your birth month and day with the current year, reduced to 1 to 9; the cycle runs from 1 (beginnings) to 9 (completion). The Personal Month adds the calendar month, and the Personal Day the date.
