Venus–Mars synastry
When one person’s Venus and the other’s Mars are joined by a major aspect. It reads the same whichever person has which.
Conjunction (0°)
The two points together, blending.
One person’s Venus meets the other’s Mars, a classic contact of attraction and chemistry. In a close relationship this often brings physical spark, playfulness and a strong sense of being drawn to each other. In friendships or working partnerships it can show as lively energy, with the Mars person energising and the Venus person softening and refining. The Venus person may feel desired or championed; the Mars person may feel welcomed and appreciated. The difficulty is that chemistry can outrun understanding. Passion may flare into irritation, and the Mars person’s directness can bruise the Venus person. Talking openly about wants and boundaries helps the warmth last and stay mutual.
Trine (120°) and sextile (60°)
Harmonious contacts: ease, or an opening that rewards effort.
Warmth and drive work well together here. The Venus person tends to appreciate the Mars person’s energy and courage, and the Mars person feels encouraged by the Venus person’s warmth and taste. In a close relationship this often supports affection and mutual desire; in other relationships it shows as easy cooperation, with one person pushing ahead and the other harmonising. A trine flows comfortably, while a sextile benefits from deliberate gestures, such as planning something active you both enjoy. The quieter risk is taking the ease for granted. Keep expressing appreciation in words as well as deeds, and make sure the Mars person does not always set the pace.
Square (90°) and opposition (180°)
Challenging contacts: friction and attraction that ask for work.
Attraction and friction can arrive together. The Mars person may come on too strong, too fast or too bluntly for the Venus person, who may want more tenderness, while the Venus person’s wish for harmony can seem indecisive or withholding to the Mars person. A square often brings sharp spark and quick irritation; an opposition can create a strong pull with a recurring push and pull over who wants what, and when. In a close relationship this can be magnetic yet tiring. In other relationships it may show as clashing styles of getting things done. Naming what each of you needs, and slowing the pace when tempers flare, turns the tension into lively energy.
