The image

A blindfolded woman sits on a stone bench with her back to the sea, holding two long swords crossed over her chest in perfect balance. A crescent moon hangs in the sky and the water behind her is calm but studded with rocks. She has made herself very still.

Upright meaning

The Two of Swords is the balance that comes from not choosing. The woman has shut her eyes, turned from the water and crossed her swords, and the result is a stillness that costs all her strength to hold. In a reading it shows a stalemate, a decision deferred, a truce between parties or between parts of yourself, and the particular peace of refusing to look at what you know. It can last a while. It cannot last forever.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the blindfold comes off. The card shows the stalemate breaking, new information arriving that forces a choice, a decision finally made, or the flood of feeling that comes when the swords are lowered. It can also mark the opposite failure, a person so overwhelmed by what they see that they cannot act. Either way the stillness is over. Look at the water.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Conformity and the equipoise which it suggests, courage, friendship, concord in a state of arms; another reading gives tenderness, affection, intimacy. The suggestion of harmony and other favourable readings must be considered in a qualified manner, as Swords generally are not symbolical of beneficent forces in human affairs.”

Reversed: “Imposture, falsehood, duplicity, disloyalty.”

Two of Swords in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is a choice you are holding at bay. You have found a balance that depends on not looking, and it is tiring. The reading is about what you are refusing to see.

Reversed

You are at the point where the stalemate breaks. The blindfold is coming off, by your choice or by events, and the matter is about handling what you now see.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is indecision, your own or another party's, that keeps everything suspended. The truce is the obstacle. Someone has to look first.

Reversed

The force across your path is new information or a decision forced before you feel ready. It is uncomfortable. It is also the end of a stalemate that was costing you.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a choice you avoided, a stalemate you accepted, or a truce that kept the peace by keeping everyone blind. The present rests on that unmade decision.

Reversed

At the root is a decision that was finally made after long avoidance, or a moment when hidden information came out. The present carries the aftermath of that reveal.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of indecision and uneasy balance is receding. The stalemate is ending whether or not you chose. What you did not look at is about to be visible anyway.

Reversed

A stretch of difficult revelation or forced choice is losing its hold. The hard decision is made. Stop re-crossing the swords.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want may be peace at the price of blindness: for the conflict to go away without your having to choose. That is not available. Aim instead for a decision you can live with.

Reversed

You consciously want to know and to decide, to be done with the suspense. That aim is sound and the reading supports it. Be ready for what the open eyes see.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A stalemate is ahead, a time when you will have to hold two things in balance without resolving them. Use it to gather yourself, not to pretend the choice is not coming.

Reversed

Information is coming that will break a deadlock and force a decision. It may arrive suddenly. Decide now what you value so that you can choose quickly when it does.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you have gone still and guarded, protecting yourself from a choice by refusing to feel it. The stillness is a skill and it has a cost. Ask what you would see if you looked.

Reversed

Part of you is flooded with what you have finally let yourself see, and part is relieved. Give yourself a moment before you act on either feeling.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are in a truce, or are avoiding an issue to keep things calm. Your surroundings are quiet in a watchful way. Nobody is saying the thing.

Reversed

Your surroundings are shifting as hidden information surfaces, or as someone finally makes a move. The calm is breaking. Expect people to take sides.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope that the choice will make itself, and fear that either option will cost you something you love. The card says you already know which way you lean. Let yourself know it.

Reversed

You fear what you will see when the blindfold comes off, and part of you may hope for a revelation that takes the decision out of your hands. It will not. Take it yourself.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

Left as it is, this ends in a stalemate held: nothing lost, nothing resolved, swords still crossed. The spread shows what you are refusing to look at. Look, and the ending changes.

Reversed

This resolves in a decision made and a deadlock broken, with information surfacing that makes the way clear. Act on what you see and the result holds.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A stalemate is holding this in place beneath the surface: a choice deferred, a truce that costs all your strength. The hidden influence is a blindfold you put on yourself. You know what you are refusing to look at.

Reversed

Beneath the surface the deadlock is breaking, information is surfacing, and a decision is being forced. The hidden influence is the blindfold coming off whether you lift it or not.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Take the blindfold off and look at the water. The balance you are holding depends on not choosing, and it is tiring you. Decide, knowing both options cost something.

Reversed

Let the stalemate break and handle what you now see. The advice is to decide quickly from your values rather than to re-cross the swords. Flooding is normal; act anyway.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are at a stalemate, holding two things in balance and refusing to look at either. Expect stillness, guardedness and no decision. You cannot choose for them; you can refuse to wait indefinitely.

Reversed

They are being forced to a decision, or have just made one after a long hold. Expect either flood or relief. Give them a moment before you ask for more.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a truce: a balance kept by not looking at something between you. It is peaceful and precarious. One of you has to look first; do it kindly.

Reversed

You are joined by a deadlock that just broke, or a hidden fact that surfaced and changed the balance. The swords are lowered. Decide what the relationship is now that you can see it.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Indecision divides you: one is holding the swords crossed and the other wants a choice made. The still one feels pressured; the other feels held hostage. Agree a date for the blindfold to come off.

Reversed

A forced decision or a revelation has opened the gap: something you both avoided is now in the room. The division is the end of the truce. It is also the first honest moment in a while.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road holds the stalemate: keep the balance, defer the choice, protect yourself by not looking. It leads to a precarious peace that cannot last. Take it only to gather yourself, with an end date.

Reversed

This road breaks the deadlock: look, decide, deal with what you see. It leads to a choice made and a flood you can survive. It is the road off the stone bench.
