The image

A young man and woman face each other and raise their cups in a pledge. Above them rises the caduceus of Hermes, two serpents twined around a winged staff, crowned with a lion's head. The exchange is formal and equal: neither reaches further than the other.

Upright meaning

The Two of Cups is attraction that becomes agreement. Two people recognise each other and choose to meet halfway, whether as lovers, friends, business partners or former opponents making peace. The lion's head above them says that such a bond carries real force when it is honest; the two serpents say that it heals. In a reading it points to a relationship forming or deepening, and to the fairness that makes it last.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the two cups are no longer level. One person gives more, wants more, or understands the arrangement differently from the other. Small misreadings go uncorrected and harden into distance. The card can also show a partnership ending, or a reconciliation that fails to take. The way back, where there is one, is to restate plainly what each of you is actually offering.

Two of Cups: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Two of Cups is a clear yes: partnership and mutual attraction are on your side.
Reversed
Not yet
Two of Cups reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but imbalance and miscommunication delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Reversed. A partnership out of balance: one doing more, a misunderstanding between people who should understand each other, a deal strained. Repair the exchange before resentment sets in.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Health supported by connection: a partner who looks after you, mutual care, a relationship that is good for your body. Balance between two people heals.

Reversed. Caring for someone at the cost of yourself, or a relationship that drains. The exchange is out of balance. Repair it before your body does the complaining.

family and home

Upright. A true bond: two people at the centre of a home who meet as equals, or a parent and child who understand each other. The clearest card for a real family connection.

Reversed. A family bond out of balance: one giving more, a misunderstanding between people who should understand each other. Repair the exchange before resentment sets in.

personal growth

Upright. Inner partnership: the parts of you making peace, head and heart in agreement, a bond with someone who helps you grow. Connection is the growth here.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Love, passion, friendship, affinity, union, concord, sympathy, the interrelation of the sexes, and--as a suggestion apart from all offices of divination--that desire which is not in Nature, but by which Nature is sanctified.”

Reversed: Waite gives no reversed meaning for this card.

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A youth and maiden are pledging one another, and above their cups rises the Caduceus of Hermes, between the great wings of which there appears a lion's head. It is a variant of a sign which is found in a few old examples of this card. Some curious emblematical meanings are attached to it, but they do not concern us in this place.

Two of Cups in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

A relationship, or the chance of one, sits at the centre of your situation. Whatever else is going on, this is about two people meeting as equals and what they agree to build.

Reversed

At the centre is a bond that has slipped out of balance. The question underneath your question is whether the two of you still mean the same thing by the arrangement between you.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a partnership or alliance. Another person's cooperation is the force shaping this now, and it supports you more than it opposes you, even if it means sharing control.

Reversed

The force across your path is a strained connection: a partner pulling in a different direction, or an agreement that was never quite mutual. Until that is addressed, other efforts stall.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This rests on a real meeting of two people, a bond made in good faith that still underlies everything here. If the present feels tangled, return to the terms you first agreed.

Reversed

At the root is an unequal pact: a relationship where one side carried more, or a reconciliation that papered over the real dispute. The imbalance built in at the start explains the present strain.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A partnership or close understanding is receding, not necessarily through conflict. The phase of mutual pledging has done its work and a different stage is beginning.

Reversed

A period of discord or miscommunication with someone close is losing its hold. The quarrel has run its course. Do not reopen it just to have the last word.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously hope for is a true partnership: to be met, matched and chosen. That is a possible outcome of this situation, provided you are willing to be as open as you want the other person to be.

Reversed

You may be aiming for a reconciliation or alliance that the other side does not want on the same terms. Check that the harmony you picture is shared and not simply hoped for.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A meeting of minds or hearts is approaching: a new alliance, a proposal, a peace offering. Say yes to it in the spirit it is given, and keep the exchange even.

Reversed

A disagreement or a cooling in a close relationship is coming. It need not be final. Address the imbalance early and plainly instead of letting it settle in.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are ready to meet someone halfway and to be fair about it. That openness is your contribution here, and it will draw an equal response if you hold to it.

Reversed

Part of you is keeping score, or holding back from a bond you say you want. Ask whether you are really offering what you are asking for.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you is a genuine ally, and your surroundings favour cooperation and goodwill. A partner, friend or colleague is ready to work with you. Let them.

Reversed

A relationship in your circle is out of balance and its tension is leaking into your situation. Someone close may feel unheard or short-changed. Mend it or step out of its way.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to be truly met by another person, and you may fear that such closeness will cost you your independence. Both the hope and the fear say that connection is what this reading is really about.

Reversed

You fear a split, or a bond that stays lopsided no matter what you do. Part of you may also hope for distance because it feels safer than being matched. Notice which way you are actually leaning.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in partnership: a union, a reconciliation, or an alliance that holds because it is fair. Keep the exchange honest on your side and the result follows.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in separation or a relationship that limps on unequal. The spread shows where the balance tipped. Correcting that, even late, can change the ending.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A partnership is forming beneath the surface, a meeting of equals that has not been named yet. The hidden influence is mutual recognition. Someone has already pledged; it is waiting to be acknowledged.

Reversed

Beneath this is an imbalance: one of you giving more or wanting more, an agreement each side understands differently. The hidden influence is a misreading left uncorrected. Restate the terms before it hardens.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Meet halfway and be fair about it. Say plainly what you are offering and what you want, and let the other do the same. Partnership here is the method; keep the cups level.

Reversed

Correct the imbalance before it becomes distance. The advice is to ask whether you are really offering what you are asking for, and to say the thing each of you assumed the other understood.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They see you as an equal and are ready to pledge, in love, friendship or work. Expect fairness and a wish for real reciprocity. Match them cup for cup.

Reversed

They are giving unevenly, more than they can or less than they claim, or they understand the arrangement differently from you. Expect quiet resentment or quiet withdrawal. Ask what they think the deal is.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a true pledge: a bond chosen by both, made in good faith, with the lion's head of real force above it. It heals and it holds. Honour the terms.

Reversed

You are joined by an uneven pact, one side carrying more, or a reconciliation that papered over the real dispute. The cups are not level. Level them before you drink to anything.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Reciprocity divides you: one feels they give more, the other feels unseen in what they give. Both are probably right. Compare the cups openly instead of keeping separate accounts.

Reversed

A broken or one-sided agreement has opened the gap: a pledge one of you did not mean the same way, or a reconciliation that did not take. The division is about terms. Restate them and see if both can sign.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is partnership: meet the other person as an equal and build the thing together. It leads to union and asks fairness from you on every exchange. It holds for as long as the cups stay level.

Reversed

This road enters an uneven bond, or stays in one hoping it will right itself. It leads to resentment or separation. Before you take it, make the terms explicit and equal.
