The image
A man in a red cloak stands on a cliff with his back to the viewer, one hand resting on a staff while two more stand planted beside him. Below, three small ships sail across a golden sea. He has sent them out and is watching for their return.
Upright meaning
The Three of Wands is the plan in motion. The decision of the Two has been made, the ships have sailed, and now the work is to watch the horizon and prepare for what comes back. In a reading it shows progress, expansion into new territory, trade and travel, the first returns on an investment of effort, and the particular confidence of someone whose foresight is paying off. Keep looking outward.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the ships are late or come back empty. The card shows delays, obstacles that appear once the venture is underway, plans that stalled after a strong start, or overreach that sent too much out at once. It can also mark a person who keeps watching the sea instead of doing the next thing. The ships are still out there. Decide what you will do while you wait, and whether you sent them in the right direction.
Three of Wands: yes or no?
- Upright
- Yes
- Three of Wands leans yes, on the strength of momentum and expansion, though it asks something of you in return.
- Reversed
- Not yet
- Three of Wands reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but delays and obstacles delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings
Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.
Upright: “He symbolizes established strength, enterprise, effort, trade, commerce, discovery; those are his ships, bearing his merchandise, which are sailing over the sea. The card also signifies able co-operation in business, as if the successful merchant prince were looking from his side towards yours with a view to help you.”
Reversed: “The end of troubles, suspension or cessation of adversity, toil and disappointment.”
From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot
Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.
A calm, stately personage, with his back turned, looking from a cliff's edge at ships passing over the sea. Three staves are planted in the ground, and he leans slightly on one of them.
Three of Wands in a spread
How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.
The Significator
What is at the heart of the matter right now?
At the centre of your situation is a venture underway and beginning to pay off. You have done the hard part of choosing and launching. The matter now is about receiving and extending what returns.
At the heart of this is a stall: something you set in motion that has not come back as planned. The question is whether to wait longer, send out another ship, or change the destination.
Crossing Card
What crosses, challenges or shapes it?
What meets your situation is expansion, perhaps an opportunity to grow or travel that stretches your resources. It is a good force to be crossed by. Make sure the base can support the reach.
The force across your path is delay, perhaps from distant people or circumstances you cannot control. Impatience is the real danger here. Use the wait rather than fighting it.
Foundation
What is the root of this?
This grew from a venture that worked, an expansion that paid off and taught you to trust your foresight. That earlier success is the ground beneath the present matter.
At the root is a venture that was delayed or overextended, a time when ships were sent out and the returns disappointed. The present carries that caution, or that frustration.
Recent Past
What is passing out of the picture?
A period of growth and outward progress is receding. The ships have come in and the expansion phase is complete. What follows asks you to consolidate rather than extend.
A stretch of delay and stalled plans is losing its hold. The waiting is nearly over, and the obstacles that held things up are becoming less important than they seemed.
Crown
What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?
What you consciously hope for is expansion: a wider market, a longer reach, returns on what you have risked. That is a realistic aim in this situation and the trend supports it.
You may be aiming for more than the base can carry, or hoping that waiting will do the work. Scale the goal to what you can actually follow through on.
Future
What is coming next?
Returns are coming on something you set in motion: news from a distance, an opportunity to expand, progress that becomes visible. Be ready to act when the ships land.
A delay is ahead. Something you are expecting will arrive later or smaller than planned. Prepare a second route rather than standing on the cliff.
Emotions
How are you meeting this, inside?
Inwardly, you are confident and forward-looking, able to wait with purpose. Your patience here is active, not passive, and that is exactly the right posture.
Part of you is restless with waiting, or regretting how much you sent out at once. Resist the urge to abandon the venture because the first returns are late.
External Forces
What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?
The people around you are cooperative and the wider situation favours growth, trade and travel. Distant contacts or partners may bring good news. The environment is working with you.
Your surroundings are slowing things down: unreliable partners, distant parties who do not respond, logistics that keep slipping. Hold your course and chase the specifics.
Hopes & Desires
What do you hope for, and what do you fear?
You hope that what you have risked will come back multiplied, and may fear the ships will not return at all. The card leans toward the hope. Keep watching, and keep working while you watch.
You fear delay and loss on something you cannot control from here, and part of you may hope to call the ships back rather than face the wait. Let them sail. Attend to what is in reach.
Outcome
Where does all of this lead?
This resolves in progress and expansion: returns on effort, a venture that grows, new territory opened. Keep your base steady while you reach and the result holds.
Left as it is, this ends in delay and a venture that underdelivers. The spread shows where the plan overreached or where waiting replaced acting. Adjust the course and the ending can change.
Hidden Influences
What is at work here that you cannot see yet?
Something you set in motion is already returning, below the horizon where you cannot see it yet. The hidden influence is momentum. The ships are closer than the empty sea suggests.
Beneath the surface a venture has overreached, or a delay is building that no one has announced. The hidden influence is a ship that is late. Decide now what you will do while you wait.
Advice
What should you do about it?
Keep looking outward and prepare for the returns. Extend into new territory, trade, travel, trust the foresight that got you here. Patience here is active: watch the horizon and ready the harbour.
Stop standing on the cliff. If the returns are late or thin, send out a second route rather than staring at the first. Check whether the base can carry what you sent out.
The Other Person
What are they bringing to this?
They are expanding, trading, waiting on returns from something they launched, and their attention is on the horizon. Expect confidence and a certain distance. They are not ignoring you; they are watching the sea.
They are frustrated by delays or have overextended themselves, and the waiting is wearing on them. Expect impatience and perhaps some blame. Help them find a second route rather than a scapegoat.
What Joins You
What holds the two of you together?
What joins you is a shared venture out into the world: you plan, launch and wait for returns together. The bond grows by expansion. Keep a harbour as well as a horizon.
You are joined by a venture that is running late, and the waiting has become the relationship's weather. The ships may still come in. Decide together what you will build while they are at sea.
What Divides You
What pulls the two of you apart?
Distance divides you: one is always looking out to sea while the other wants attention on the shore. Expansion on one side feels like absence on the other. Set times to come back from the cliff.
Delay or overreach has opened the gap: a promise that has not returned, effort sent out and not repaid. The division is impatience. Agree what you are actually waiting for and for how long.
A Path
What happens if you take this road?
This road is expansion: send the ships out, extend your reach, trust the returns. It leads to growth and asks a steady base and real patience. Make sure you can afford the wait.
This road overextends or stalls: too much sent out at once, or waiting as a substitute for acting. It leads to thin returns and frustration. Scale it to what you can follow through on.
