The image

A figure in a white robe and red cloak stands at a table on which lie a cup, a sword, a staff and a pentacle, one hand raising a wand to the sky and the other pointing to the earth. A lemniscate hovers over the head and a snake-belt circles the waist. Roses and lilies grow above and below.

Upright meaning

The Magician is the moment will becomes act. The four suits lie on the table, meaning every kind of resource is available, and the raised wand and pointing hand say the Magician's job is to draw power down and put it into the world. In a reading the card shows skill, focus, the ability to make something happen with the tools you have, confidence in your own capacity, and the knowledge that intention is only half of the trick. The other half is the hand on the table.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the hands lose their alignment. The card shows will scattered across too many aims, talent left unused, skill turned to manipulation or deceit, or confidence that is really illusion. It can mark a con artist, or a person who could do anything and does nothing. The tools are still on the table. Ask what you are actually using them for, and whether the trick is on someone else or yourself.

The Magician: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
The Magician is a clear yes: will and skill are on your side.
Reversed
Not yet
The Magician reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but scattered will and manipulation delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

The Magician with other cards

The Magician by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. You have everything you need to make this relationship work, and the card says use it. Speak plainly, plan the date, make the call. Attraction here is active and willed, not something that happens to you.

Reversed. Charm without substance. Someone is saying the right words and the follow-through is missing, or you are performing a version of yourself you cannot keep up. Watch what is done rather than what is promised.

work and career

Upright. You have the tools and the skill; the card says put them on the table. Pitch the idea, apply for the role, make the thing. Work here is willed, focused and visible.

Reversed. Talent unused or misrepresented. A polished presentation hiding thin substance, or real ability left idle because you have not claimed it. Watch for manipulation at the table, including your own.

money

Upright. You have the means and the skill to make money work: a plan, a pitch, a budget that turns intention into result. Resources are on the table. Use them deliberately.

Reversed. Clever presentation over sound numbers, or ability left idle. Someone may be selling you an illusion, possibly yourself. Check what the figures actually say.

health and wellbeing

Upright. You have the tools to improve how you feel: knowledge, habits, the will to use them. Focus on one thing and do it daily. Wellbeing here is made, not wished for.

Reversed. Good intentions without follow-through, or a regime that is more performance than practice. Tricks and quick fixes instead of the plain work. Pick one real tool up.

family and home

Upright. You have what it takes to make the household work: the skill, the will, the attention. Organise the thing, have the conversation, fix what is broken. Home here is made by hand.

Reversed. Promises to family without follow-through, or a performance of the good parent or partner that cannot be kept up. Watch what is done rather than what is said.

personal growth

Upright. You have what you need; the task is to use it. Skill, will and attention brought to bear on one thing at a time. Growth here is about doing, not waiting to be ready.

Reversed. Scattered will or self-deception: talents idle, energy spread across too many things, a story about yourself that outruns the facts. Pick one tool up and finish something.

the spiritual path

Upright. The practitioner: will and attention brought to bear, the tools of the path laid out and used. As above, so below. Your practice is active now; do it rather than read about it.

Reversed. Spiritual showmanship, or power unused. A practice that is more performance than devotion, or a gift left idle. Pick up one tool and use it in private.

a decision

Upright. You already have everything the decision requires: the facts, the skill, the will. Stop gathering and start choosing. The option you can act on today is the one.

Reversed. A decision clouded by someone's clever framing, or by your own. The pitch is better than the substance. Look at what each option actually does, not how it is described.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Skill, diplomacy, address, subtlety; sickness, pain, loss, disaster, snares of enemies; self-confidence, will; the Querent, if male.”

Reversed: “Physician, Magus, mental disease, disgrace, disquiet.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A youthful figure in the robe of a magician, having the countenance of divine Apollo, with smile of confidence and shining eyes. Above his head is the mysterious sign of the Holy Spirit, the sign of life, like an endless cord, forming the figure 8 in a horizontal position {infinity symbol}. About his waist is a serpent-cincture, the serpent appearing to devour its own tail. This is familiar to most as a conventional symbol of eternity, but here it indicates more especially the eternity of attainment in the spirit. In the Magician's right hand is a wand raised towards heaven, while the left hand is pointing to the earth. This dual sign is known in very high grades of the Instituted Mysteries; it shews the descent of grace, virtue and light, drawn from things above and derived to things below. The suggestion throughout is therefore the possession and communication of the Powers and Gifts of the Spirit. On the table in front of the Magician are the symbols of the four Tarot suits, signifying the elements of natural life, which lie like counters before the adept, and he adapts them as he wills. Beneath are roses and lilies, the flos campi and lilium convallium, changed into garden flowers, to shew the culture of aspiration. This card signifies the divine motive in man, reflecting God, the will in the liberation of its union with that which is above. It is also the unity of individual being on all planes, and in a very high sense it is thought, in the fixation thereof. With further reference to what I have called the sign of life and its connexion with the number 8, it may be remembered that Christian Gnosticism speaks of rebirth in Christ as a change "unto the Ogdoad." The mystic number is termed Jerusalem above, the Land flowing with Milk and Honey, the Holy Spirit and the Land of the Lord. According to Martinism, 8 is the number of Christ.

The Magician in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is your own capability. You have the tools and the will to use them, and the reading is about focusing that power on one thing instead of admiring it.

Reversed

At the heart of this is talent unused or will misdirected, perhaps a cleverness that has slipped into manipulation or an ability you keep not applying. The matter turns on honest use of what you can do.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a demand for skill and focus, or a capable person whose will is shaping events. It asks you to act deliberately. Pick up a tool.

Reversed

The force across your path is trickery or scattered effort, someone's manipulation or your own inability to concentrate. Until the will is gathered, nothing lands.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a moment when you used your skill deliberately and it worked, a demonstration of what you can do. That proven capacity is the ground beneath the present.

Reversed

At the root is a deception or a squandered gift, a time when ability was misused or left idle. The present carries that gap between what you could do and what you did.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of focused action and skilled manifestation is receding. The trick has been performed and the result is real. What follows asks you to tend what you made.

Reversed

A stretch of scattered will, illusion or manipulation is losing its hold. The sleight of hand is over. Put the tools back on the table and pick up one.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to make something happen through your own skill and will. That is achievable here and the circumstances favour focused action. Choose the one thing.

Reversed

You may be aiming at the appearance of mastery, or at results by cleverness rather than work. Make the goal something you would be proud to show how you did.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A time of effective action is coming, when your skills align with an opportunity and things you intend start to happen. Prepare the table and be ready to point.

Reversed

You are heading into a stretch of scattered effort, or into contact with someone deceptive. Keep your aims few and check what is behind the show.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are confident, focused and aware of your own power. That self-command is what this matter needs from you. Point at the earth as well as the sky.

Reversed

Part of you is doubting your ability or using it for the wrong ends, and you may be fooling yourself about which. Lay the tools out and look at them honestly.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you is skilled, resourceful and able to make things happen, and the atmosphere favours capable action. Learn the trick from them. Your surroundings supply the tools.

Reversed

Someone in your circle is a trickster, all show and sleight of hand, or the atmosphere is one of talent going to waste. Watch the hands, not the wand.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to prove your ability and bring something into being by your own effort, and may fear you are not as capable as you seem. The card says you are. Begin and the proof follows.

Reversed

You fear being exposed as a fraud, or being deceived by one, and part of you may hope that cleverness can replace the work. It cannot. Notice that wish and set it down.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves through skill and will: a goal achieved by focused action, intention made real. Keep the hands aligned and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in wasted talent or a trick that unravels, intention never grounded. The spread shows where the will scattered. Gather it and the ending changes.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

Below the surface you have more capability and more influence over this than you have admitted. The tools are on your table. What is hidden is your own power, and perhaps a reluctance to use it.

Reversed

Something here is sleight of hand: a presentation that outruns the substance, perhaps yours, perhaps someone else's. Watch the hands rather than the wand before you commit.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Act with focus. Choose one aim, gather what you already have, and bring will down into the work. You are more able than the situation has let you feel. Point at the earth as well as the sky.

Reversed

Stop scattering your effort and stop trying to win by cleverness alone. If you have been fooling anyone, including yourself, this is the moment to lay the tools out honestly.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are capable, focused and good at making things happen, and they know it. Expect competence and a certain confidence. Their skill is real; make sure it is being used for you both.

Reversed

They may be more show than substance right now, or talented and not using it. Watch for words that run ahead of actions, or for a brilliance that keeps not quite landing.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is making things together: shared skill, a sense that between you the tools are all on the table. You are better at the work for each other's presence. That is a strong bond.

Reversed

The link between you has become a performance, or depends on one person's cleverness. Check whether you are still building something together or just admiring each other's tricks.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

A contest of competence sits between you: who is more capable, whose way works. One of you is wielding skill like a wand over the other. Lay the tools down and share the table.

Reversed

Deception or manipulation, even small, has opened the gap, or a talent one of you keeps not using has become a grievance. Honesty about the trick is the way back.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road asks you to act on your own skill and will, deliberately and with everything you have. It leads to results that are yours. It is demanding and it rewards focus; drift and it fails.

Reversed

This road relies on cleverness or appearance rather than substance, or on a plan you keep not committing to. It leads to effort scattered and a trick that eventually unravels. Choose it only after making it honest.
