The image
A naked man and woman stand in a green garden under a great winged angel whose arms spread over them from a cloud, with the sun blazing above. Behind the woman grows a tree with a serpent coiled in it; behind the man, a tree of flames. She looks up at the angel; he looks at her. A mountain rises between them in the distance.
Upright meaning
The Lovers is the choice that defines you. It is love, certainly, and the attraction between two people who complete something in each other, but the angel and the two trees make it larger: a decision made from the heart that aligns what you want with what you value. In a reading the card shows union, partnership, a relationship that matters, and a fork in the road where the right path is the one that keeps you whole. The man looks at the woman; she looks at the angel. The whole picture is the way the eye travels.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the angel's blessing is withdrawn. The card shows a relationship out of balance, a choice made against your own values, temptation that costs more than it gives, or an inability to choose that leaves you in neither garden. It can mark disharmony between what you want and what you believe you should want. The sun is still up. Ask which tree you are standing under and whether you chose it.
The Lovers: yes or no?
- Upright
- Yes
- The Lovers is a clear yes: union and a values-based choice are on your side.
- Reversed
- Not yet
- The Lovers reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but misalignment and temptation delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.
The Lovers with other cards
- The Lovers and The DevilThe Lovers and The Devil are the same bond seen two ways, chosen freely or held by habit.
- The Lovers and Two of CupsThe Lovers with the Two of Cups is as clear a statement of a true partnership as the deck makes.
The Lovers by topic
How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.
love and relationships
Upright. A real meeting of two people, and a choice made with the whole self. This is the card of partnership in its fullest sense: desire and values pointing the same way. If you are deciding, choose what you would still choose in daylight.
Reversed. Misalignment: attraction without agreement, or a choice avoided because every option costs something. Someone may be tempted elsewhere. Name what you actually want before the drift decides for you.
work and career
Upright. A career choice made with your values, or a partnership that doubles what either could do alone. Choose what you would still choose when the excitement fades. Collaboration here is a real meeting.
Reversed. A decision avoided or made against your values. A tempting offer that does not fit, a partnership misaligned, work you do not believe in. Name what you actually want from a job.
money
Upright. A financial choice made with your values: a purchase, an investment or a partnership you believe in. Shared finances with someone you trust. Choose what you would still choose in daylight.
Reversed. Money and values pulling apart: a tempting deal that does not fit, a financial partnership misaligned, a choice avoided because every option costs something. Name what you actually want to pay for.
health and wellbeing
Upright. A choice about your wellbeing made from what you value: how you want to live in your body, what you are willing to give up for it. Alignment between what you do and what you want.
Reversed. Habits pulling against values: knowing what is good for you and choosing the other thing, or refusing to choose. Name what you actually want your body to be able to do.
family and home
Upright. A choice made with the whole family in view, or a bond between two people that becomes the centre of a home. Partnership with shared values. Choose what you would still choose in daylight.
Reversed. A family loyalty pulling against a personal one, or a choice avoided because every option hurts someone. Name what you actually want before the drift decides.
personal growth
Upright. A choice made from values rather than fear: integrating two sides of yourself, committing to what you love. Growth here is alignment. Choose what you would still choose in daylight.
Reversed. Misalignment: living against your values, choosing what you do not want because it is easier, or refusing to choose. Name what you actually want before the drift decides.
the spiritual path
Upright. A choice made from the whole self: the union of opposites within you, commitment to a path you love. Alignment between what you believe and how you live.
Reversed. Living against your own values, or a spiritual choice avoided because every option costs something. Temptation toward the easier faith. Name what you actually believe.
a decision
Upright. The decision card itself. Choose with your values, not your fears, and choose what you would still choose in daylight. The right option is the one you would be proud to explain.
Reversed. A choice avoided because every option costs something, or one made against what you believe. Temptation toward the easier path. Name what you actually want first.
Waite’s divinatory meanings
Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.
Upright: “Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome.”
Reversed: “Failure, foolish designs. Another account speaks of marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds.”
From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot
Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.
The sun shines in the zenith, and beneath is a great winged figure with arms extended, pouring down influences. In the foreground are two human figures, male and female, unveiled before each other, as if Adam and Eve when they first occupied the paradise of the earthly body. Behind the man is the Tree of Life, bearing twelve fruits, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is behind the woman; the serpent is twining round it. The figures suggest youth, virginity, innocence and love before it is contaminated by gross material desire. This is in all simplicity the card of human love, here exhibited as part of the way, the truth and the life. It replaces, by recourse to first principles, the old card of marriage, which I have described previously, and the later follies which depicted man between vice and virtue. In a very high sense, the card is a mystery of the Covenant and Sabbath. The suggestion in respect of the woman is that she signifies that attraction towards the sensitive life which carries within it the idea of the Fall of Man, but she is rather the working of a Secret Law of Providence than a willing and conscious temptress. It is through her imputed lapse that man shall arise ultimately, and only by her can he complete himself. The card is therefore in its way another intimation concerning the great mystery of womanhood. The old meanings fall to pieces of necessity with the old pictures, but even as interpretations of the latter, some of them were of the order of commonplace and others were false in symbolism.
The Lovers in a spread
How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.
The Significator
What is at the heart of the matter right now?
At the centre of your situation is a union or a choice that involves your whole self. A relationship, or a decision as weighty as one, is the heart of the matter. The reading is about choosing in line with what you value.
At the heart of this is a misalignment: a relationship or a decision that pulls against your own values, or a choice you have been refusing to make. The matter turns on honesty about what you actually want.
Crossing Card
What crosses, challenges or shapes it?
What meets your situation is a relationship or a choice that cannot be sidestepped. It asks for commitment. It may complicate other plans, and it may be the thing those plans were for.
The force across your path is temptation, indecision or a partnership that has slipped out of balance. Until the choice is faced, every other matter waits in the garden.
Foundation
What is the root of this?
This grew from a union or a defining choice, a love or a decision made from the heart that set your direction. That alignment is the ground beneath the present.
At the root is a choice made against your values, or a relationship that was never truly in balance. The present carries that compromise.
Recent Past
What is passing out of the picture?
A period of love, partnership or heartfelt choosing is receding. The decision has been made and the bond formed. What follows asks you to live it rather than keep choosing it.
A stretch of indecision, temptation or disharmony in a relationship is losing its hold. The misalignment is correcting. Let the old choice go and make a cleaner one.
Crown
What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?
What you consciously want is love and a life that fits your values, a partnership in which you are fully yourself. That is possible here and the circumstances favour it. Choose with the whole heart.
You may be aiming at a relationship or a choice because it is wanted of you rather than by you. Revise the goal until the angel would bless it.
Future
What is coming next?
A significant choice or a deepening relationship is coming. It will ask you to decide what matters most. Prepare by knowing your own values before the moment arrives.
A temptation or a relationship imbalance lies ahead, or a decision you will be tempted to put off. Face it directly. The garden does not wait indefinitely.
Emotions
How are you meeting this, inside?
Inwardly, you are open to love and clear about what you value, able to choose from the heart. That integrity is your gift to this matter. Trust it.
Part of you wants something that conflicts with what you believe, and you have been avoiding the conflict rather than resolving it. Name both sides. Then choose.
External Forces
What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?
The people around you are supportive of a union or a choice you are making, and the atmosphere favours partnership and honest commitment. The garden is in bloom.
Your surroundings are pulling you toward a choice that is not yours, or a relationship near you is out of balance and affecting the situation. Keep your own values in view.
Hopes & Desires
What do you hope for, and what do you fear?
You hope for a love that fits you completely and a choice you will never regret, and may fear that choosing closes other doors. It does. That is what makes it a choice worth making.
You fear choosing wrong, or fear a relationship that asks you to betray yourself, and part of you may hope that not deciding keeps every option alive. It keeps none of them. Decide.
Outcome
Where does all of this lead?
This resolves in union and alignment: a partnership that holds, a choice made from the heart and blessed by your own values. Keep looking up and the result holds.
Left as it is, this ends in a relationship or a decision at odds with who you are, or in a choice never made. The spread shows where the values were set aside. Return to them and the ending changes.
Hidden Influences
What is at work here that you cannot see yet?
A choice of the heart is operating underneath the practical question. Who or what you love is steering this, and it has not been said aloud. Say it, at least to yourself.
You want something that conflicts with what you believe you should want, and the conflict is running the show from below. Or a temptation has already half-decided the matter. Look at both trees.
Advice
What should you do about it?
Choose from the heart, and choose in line with your values. Let the decision be one you could stand under the angel's wings and own. Do not let convenience make a choice this important.
Stop avoiding the decision; indecision is quietly choosing for you. Face the mismatch between what you want and what you believe, and resolve it rather than living in the gap.
The Other Person
What are they bringing to this?
They are in this with their whole heart, or ready to be, and they are weighing a real choice about you. Expect sincerity and some intensity. What they value is in play, not just what they want.
They are torn, tempted or out of step with their own values, and it is showing as indecision or mixed signals. Expect them to want two things at once. Do not try to decide for them.
What Joins You
What holds the two of you together?
What joins you is love that aligns with what you each believe, a union of values and not only of attraction. It is the kind of bond the angel blesses. Keep looking up together.
You are joined by attraction without alignment, or by a choice one of you made against their own grain. The bond is real and it has a crack running through its values. Address the crack, not the attraction.
What Divides You
What pulls the two of you apart?
A choice divides you: one of you has made it and the other has not, or you have each chosen differently. Love is present on both sides and so is a fork. Walk to the fork together and look.
Temptation, or a betrayal of shared values, has opened the gap. Someone chose against what the two of you stood for. Honesty about it is painful and it is the only repair.
A Path
What happens if you take this road?
This road is the one your heart and your values agree on. It leads to union and to a life that fits you, and it asks you to close other doors to walk it. That closing is what makes it a choice.
This road is the tempting one, or the one taken to avoid deciding. It leads to misalignment, a life slightly at odds with who you are. If you take it, know what you are trading.
