The image
An old man in a grey hooded cloak stands alone on a snowy peak, head bowed, holding up a lantern in which a six-pointed star glows. His other hand rests on a tall staff. Below and behind him the mountains fall away into darkness. He is not looking at the lantern; he is lighting the way for whoever comes next.
Upright meaning
The Hermit is the wisdom you find when you stop talking. He has climbed away from the crowd, not to escape it but to see further, and the lantern he holds is for others as much as for himself. In a reading the card shows solitude chosen for a purpose, a search for meaning, inner guidance, a teacher who has walked the path, and the patience to let understanding arrive in its own time. It often means that the answer requires quiet, and that you are closer to it than the dark suggests.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the lantern goes out or is hidden under the cloak. The card shows isolation that has become loneliness, withdrawal used to avoid life rather than to understand it, a refusal of counsel, or a wisdom hoarded instead of shared. It can mark a person who has been on the mountain too long. The star is still in the lantern. Ask whether the solitude is still teaching you or has become a place to hide.
The Hermit: yes or no?
- Upright
- Maybe
- The Hermit answers neither yes nor no: it points to solitude and searching, and the answer turns on choices still to be made.
- Reversed
- Maybe
- The Hermit reversed softens a hard card into a maybe: isolation and avoidance. The outcome depends on what you do next.

The Hermit by topic
How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.
love and relationships
Upright. A time apart, or a relationship with a lot of room in it. One of you needs solitude to find out what you feel, and that is not rejection. For a single reader, the search inward comes before the search outward.
Reversed. Isolation that has stopped being healthy, or loneliness inside a relationship. Someone has withdrawn and called it independence. Come back down the mountain and let yourself be found.
work and career
Upright. Working alone, or stepping back to think about what you actually want from your career. Research, deep work, a sabbatical, mentorship sought from someone wiser. The answer is found by looking inward.
Reversed. Isolation that has stopped being productive, or avoiding the collaboration a project needs. Lost in the detail, out of touch with the team. Come back and share the lamp.
money
Upright. Time to think about what money is for: a review of your finances, advice sought from someone wiser, a season of living simply. The answer is found by looking inward, not at the market.
Reversed. Isolation with your money worries, or avoiding the advice you need. Hoarding, or refusing to look at the accounts. Come back down and let someone help.
health and wellbeing
Upright. Rest and withdrawal for the sake of healing: a retreat, time alone, a slower pace. The lamp lights only a few steps. Take them.
Reversed. Isolation that has stopped being restful, or avoiding the help you need. Hiding a health concern. Come back down and let someone in.
family and home
Upright. Time apart from the family, or a relative who needs solitude. Not rejection; a search for something they cannot find in the noise. Leave the lamp in the window.
Reversed. Isolation inside a household, or a relative who has withdrawn too far. Someone has gone up the mountain and not come back. Go and find them.
personal growth
Upright. Solitude for the sake of truth: time alone, a retreat, a search inward. The lamp is yours and it lights only a few steps. That is enough.
Reversed. Isolation that has stopped teaching anything, or avoidance called introspection. The mountain was for a season, not a residence. Bring what you learned back down.
the spiritual path
Upright. The seeker: solitude, the lamp held high, the search for truth undertaken alone. Retreat, contemplation, the mountain. The light shows a few steps; that is enough.
Reversed. Isolation that has stopped teaching, or withdrawal used to avoid the world. The mountain was for a season. Bring the lamp back down.
a decision
Upright. Step back before choosing: time alone with the question, advice from someone wiser, the lamp held up. The decision is found inward. Do not let the crowd make it.
Reversed. Isolation with the decision, or avoiding the counsel you need. Lost in deliberation, out of touch with the facts. Come down and ask someone.
Waite’s divinatory meanings
Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.
Upright: “Prudence, circumspection; also and especially treason, dissimulation, roguery, corruption.”
Reversed: “Concealment, disguise, policy, fear, unreasoned caution.”

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.
The variation from the conventional models in this card is only that the lamp is not enveloped partially in the mantle of its bearer, who blends the idea of the Ancient of Days with the Light of the World It is a star which shines in the lantern. I have said that this is a card of attainment, and to extend this conception the figure is seen holding up his beacon on an eminence. Therefore the Hermit is not, as Court de Gebelin explained, a wise man in search of truth and justice; nor is he, as a later explanation proposes, an especial example of experience. His beacon intimates that "where I am, you also may be." It is further a card which is understood quite incorrectly when it is connected with the idea of occult isolation, as the protection of personal magnetism against admixture. This is one of the frivolous renderings which we owe to liphas Lvi. It has been adopted by the French Order of Martinism and some of us have heard a great deal of the Silent and Unknown Philosophy enveloped by his mantle from the knowledge of the profane. In true Martinism, the significance of the term Philosophe inconnu was of another order. It did not refer to the intended concealment of the Instituted Mysteries, much less of their substitutes, but--like the card itself--to the truth that the Divine Mysteries secure their own protection from those who are unprepared.
The Hermit in a spread
How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.
The Significator
What is at the heart of the matter right now?
At the centre of your situation is a need for solitude and inner searching. You are on the mountain, or should be, looking for a light that the crowd cannot give. The reading honours the climb.
At the heart of this is a withdrawal that has lost its purpose: isolation, avoidance, a light kept under the cloak. The matter turns on whether you come down or stay hidden.
Crossing Card
What crosses, challenges or shapes it?
What meets your situation is the need to step back and think, alone, before acting. It slows everything. It also prevents the mistake you would make in the noise.
The force across your path is isolation or a refusal to hear advice, yours or someone else's. Someone has withdrawn when they should have spoken. Open the door a crack.
Foundation
What is the root of this?
This grew from a period of solitude and searching, a time apart that gave you understanding you still rely on. That hard-won wisdom is the ground beneath the present.
At the root is a loneliness that was mistaken for wisdom, or a time when you shut everyone out and lost something. The present carries that habit of retreat.
Recent Past
What is passing out of the picture?
A period of withdrawal and inner work is receding. The lantern has shown what it needed to. It is time to come down from the mountain and use what you learned.
A stretch of isolation or avoidance is losing its hold. You are returning to the world. Bring the light with you rather than leaving it on the peak.
Crown
What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?
What you consciously want is understanding, the kind that comes from quiet and distance. That is available here if you make room for it. Aim at the mountain, with a plan to descend.
You may be aiming at solitude as an escape, wanting to be left alone more than you want to understand. Make the goal the lantern, not the cloak.
Future
What is coming next?
A period of solitude and reflection is coming, or a wise guide will appear with a light for your path. Welcome the quiet. It is preparing you for something.
You are heading into a stretch of loneliness or of shutting people out when you need them. Schedule contact deliberately, even when the cloak feels safer.
Emotions
How are you meeting this, inside?
Inwardly, you are reflective, seeking and wise enough to know you need quiet. That inner orientation is your gift to this matter. Follow the lantern.
Part of you is hiding on the mountain and calling it wisdom, or refusing a light that someone else is holding up. Notice which. Then take one step toward the valley.
External Forces
What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?
Someone around you, often an older or experienced person, is a quiet source of guidance and will light the way if asked. The atmosphere favours reflection. Ask.
Your surroundings are isolating, with people withdrawn or unwilling to share what they know. The lanterns are under cloaks. Do not take the general silence personally.
Hopes & Desires
What do you hope for, and what do you fear?
You hope to find the understanding you are looking for and fear the loneliness of the search. The card says the solitude is temporary and the light is real. Climb.
You fear being alone, or fear that no one can help, and part of you may hope to stay on the mountain where no one can disappoint you. The lantern was made to be carried down.
Outcome
Where does all of this lead?
This resolves through wisdom gained in solitude: understanding found, guidance received, a light that shows the next step. Carry it down and the result holds.
Left as it is, this ends in isolation, a wisdom kept to yourself or never found because you stopped looking. The spread shows where the lantern was hidden. Lift it and the ending changes.
Hidden Influences
What is at work here that you cannot see yet?
Someone has withdrawn to think, and that silence is shaping events more than any action. It may be you. The hidden influence is a search for meaning that has not yet come down the mountain.
Isolation is at work underneath: a loneliness being called wisdom, or counsel refused because accepting it would mean needing someone. The lantern is under the cloak. Lift it.
Advice
What should you do about it?
Step back and go quiet. Take the question somewhere alone, hold the lantern up, and wait for the understanding to arrive. Then come down and use it. Solitude is the method, not the destination.
Stop hiding on the mountain. Come down, ask for the guidance you have been refusing, and share what you know. The withdrawal has stopped teaching you anything.
The Other Person
What are they bringing to this?
They are reflective, private and searching for something they cannot name yet. Expect distance that is not rejection and wisdom that arrives slowly. Give them the mountain and they will come back.
They have withdrawn too far, into loneliness or avoidance, and may be refusing help they need. Expect silence that has stopped being thoughtful. Knock, but do not force the door.
What Joins You
What holds the two of you together?
What joins you is a shared search: you each light the other's path and respect the other's solitude. The bond does not need constant company. That is its strength and its risk.
You are joined by parallel loneliness, two hermits on neighbouring peaks who have stopped signalling. The connection is a habit of distance. One lantern raised changes it.
What Divides You
What pulls the two of you apart?
Solitude divides you: one of you needs to withdraw and the other reads it as abandonment. Both needs are legitimate. Agree what the withdrawal means and when it ends.
Isolation or refused counsel has opened the gap. Someone went up the mountain and did not come down, or will not hear what the other has learned. The division is about letting the light in.
A Path
What happens if you take this road?
This road is the solitary one: withdraw, reflect, seek your own understanding before you act. It leads to wisdom that is genuinely yours and asks patience and some loneliness. Set a date to come down.
This road is withdrawal as escape, or going it alone when help was offered. It leads to isolation and a lantern no one else sees. Take it only with a plan to return.
