The image

A woman in a loose white gown patterned with pomegranates reclines on cushions in a lush field, a crown of twelve stars on her head and a sceptre in her hand. Wheat grows thick at her feet, a waterfall tumbles through the forest behind her, and a heart-shaped shield bearing the sign of Venus rests beside her throne.

Upright meaning

The Empress is life making more life. Everything in the picture is growing, flowing or ripening, and she sits in the middle of it entirely at ease. In a reading the card shows abundance, creativity bearing fruit, pregnancy or birth in a literal or figurative sense, the pleasures of the body and the senses, and a nurturing presence that makes things flourish simply by being near them. She asks you to receive as freely as you give.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the field goes dry or overgrown. The card shows creative block, nurturing that smothers, dependence on being needed, neglect of the body or of pleasure, or abundance that has become excess. It can mark a mother or a maternal figure whose care has turned controlling, or a time when nothing you plant seems to grow. The wheat is still in the ground. Ask what the field is not getting, or getting too much of.

The Empress: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
The Empress is a clear yes: abundance and nurturing are on your side.
Reversed
Not yet
The Empress reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but creative block and smothering delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

The Empress by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. Warmth, generosity and physical ease between two people. The relationship is fertile ground; whatever you plant in it will grow, so plant deliberately. Pleasure and care are the point here, not analysis.

Reversed. Smothering, or a love that has gone hungry. One of you is giving so much there is nothing left to want, or the tenderness has dried up under daily life. Feed yourself first, then the relationship.

work and career

Upright. A fruitful stretch: a project maturing, a creative role flourishing, abundance that comes from tending rather than forcing. Nurture the team and the work grows. Enjoy the growth you have cultivated.

Reversed. Creative drought or overgrowth: a project smothered by too much care, or a role that has stopped feeding you. Dependence on one client or one boss has become risky. Prune, and let new things in.

money

Upright. Abundance that grows from tending: investments maturing, a comfortable income, generosity you can afford. Enjoy what you have grown. Plant deliberately, because this ground returns what it is given.

Reversed. Overspending on comfort, or a dry spell after plenty. Dependence on one source of income has become a risk. Trim the growth and tend the roots.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Nourishment: good food, rest, pleasure, being cared for. Health here grows from tending rather than striving. Fertility and the body's natural abundance are favoured.

Reversed. Overindulgence, or self-neglect while caring for everyone else. The body is asking to be fed properly, not smothered or starved. Tend yourself first.

family and home

Upright. Nurture at its fullest: a mother or a mothering presence, a home that feeds everyone, fertility and growth. Care is the whole point here. Let yourself be looked after too.

Reversed. Smothering, or a home that has gone hungry. One person giving so much there is nothing left, or care that has dried up under daily life. Feed yourself first.

personal growth

Upright. Growth as nourishment: rest, pleasure, creativity, letting yourself be cared for. Not every stretch of growth is effort. This one is about receiving what feeds you.

Reversed. Self-neglect or dependence: giving until there is nothing left, or leaning on others for a nurture you could give yourself. Feed yourself first; it is not selfish.

the spiritual path

Upright. The sacred in the body and the earth: nature, creativity, pleasure as a form of prayer. Not every path goes upward. This one goes into the garden.

Reversed. Spirituality that neglects the body, or a practice gone to seed. Dependence on comfort mistaken for peace. Feed yourself properly, then pray.

a decision

Upright. Choose the option that nourishes: the one that leaves room to grow, that cares for you and for others. Abundance follows what is tended. Do not pick the starved road.

Reversed. A choice driven by dependence, or by too much comfort. You may be choosing the option that smothers rather than feeds. Ask which one you could still breathe in.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Fruitfulness, action, initiative, length of days; the unknown, clandestine; also difficulty, doubt, ignorance.”

Reversed: “Light, truth, the unravelling of involved matters, public rejoicings; according to another reading, vacillation.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A stately figure, seated, having rich vestments and royal aspect, as of a daughter of heaven and earth. Her diadem is of twelve stars, gathered in a cluster. The symbol of Venus is on the shield which rests near her. A field of corn is ripening in front of her, and beyond there is a fall of water. The sceptre which she bears is surmounted by the globe of this world. She is the inferior Garden of Eden, the Earthly Paradise, all that is symbolized by the visible house of man. She is not Regina coeli, but she is still refugium peccatorum, the fruitful mother of thousands. There are also certain aspects in which she has been correctly described as desire and the wings thereof, as the woman clothed with the sun, as Gloria Mundi and the veil of the Sanctum Sanctorum; but she is not, I may add, the soul that has attained wings, unless all the symbolism is counted up another and unusual way. She is above all things universal fecundity and the outer sense of the Word. This is obvious, because there is no direct message which has been given to man like that which is borne by woman; but she does not herself carry its interpretation. In another order of ideas, the card of the Empress signifies the door or gate by which an entrance is obtained into this life, as into the Garden of Venus; and then the way which leads out therefrom, into that which is beyond, is the secret known to the High Priestess: it is communicated by her to the elect. Most old attributions of this card are completely wrong on the symbolism--as, for example, its identification with the Word, Divine Nature, the Triad, and so forth.

The Empress in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is growth and abundance. Something is flourishing, or ready to, and you are the ground it grows in. The reading is about letting it ripen without forcing it.

Reversed

At the heart of this is a block in what should be fertile: creativity stalled, care gone wrong, or a neglect of your own needs. The matter turns on tending the gardener.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a nurturing, creative influence, perhaps a generous person or the demands of something growing. It asks for patience and care. It is a good force to be crossed by.

Reversed

The force across your path is smothering or stagnation, care that controls or creativity that will not come. Something is being overwatered or starved. Find out which.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from abundance and nurturing, a fertile period or a maternal presence that let you flourish. That generous ground is the base beneath the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is a nurturing that failed or smothered, a time of creative drought or of being needed too much. The present carries that imbalance in how you give and receive care.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of creativity, abundance and sensual ease is receding. The harvest has come in. What follows asks you to work with what grew rather than keep planting.

Reversed

A stretch of block, dependence or neglect is losing its hold. The field is recovering. Feed it gently and do not expect a crop by morning.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is for your life to bear fruit: creativity, family, pleasure, abundance. That is possible here and the circumstances favour growth. Make room to receive it.

Reversed

You may be aiming at being needed, or at a comfort that would smother the thing you want to grow. Revise the goal to include your own pleasure and some empty ground.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A fertile period is coming: creative flow, abundance, a birth or a flourishing of something you have tended. Prepare to enjoy it rather than manage it.

Reversed

A stretch of creative drought or of care gone out of balance lies ahead. Rest the field, tend your own body, and the fertility returns.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are generous, creative and in touch with your senses. That abundance is your gift to this matter. Give from it, and let yourself be given to.

Reversed

Part of you is depleted or is nurturing others to avoid tending yourself, and the creative well has gone quiet as a result. Rest. Pleasure is not a luxury here; it is the water.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you, often a warm and generous woman, is making things flourish, and your surroundings are abundant and supportive. Accept the care that is offered. The field is rich.

Reversed

Your surroundings are smothering or barren, with care that controls or support that has dried up. The atmosphere is out of balance. Protect your own growth from both excess and neglect.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope for a life that bears fruit, for abundance and love and the pleasure of growing things. The fear underneath is of barrenness. The card says the field is fertile. Plant.

Reversed

You fear that nothing you make will grow, or that your care will become control, and part of you may hope to be looked after rather than to create. Notice the wish. The Empress does both.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in abundance: creativity bearing fruit, a flourishing of love or family or work, pleasure enjoyed without guilt. Keep tending and receiving, and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in a creative drought or a care that smothers what it meant to grow. The spread shows where the field was neglected or drowned. Correct the watering and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

Something here is growing whether or not you are tending it: a project, a relationship, a part of yourself that wants to bear fruit. The hidden influence is abundance that you have not yet noticed is yours.

Reversed

Beneath this is a hunger to be looked after, or a care for others that has quietly become control. Something in the field is being overwatered or starved. Find which.

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Nurture it. Give the situation time, warmth and material care, and let it grow at its own pace. Enjoy the senses while you wait; pleasure is part of the method here, not a distraction.

Reversed

Stop smothering or stop neglecting, whichever you have been doing. Tend yourself before you tend anyone else. The remedy for a dry field is rest and water, not more effort.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are generous, warm and creative, inclined to nurture and to make things flourish around them. Expect care that is practical and sensual. Let them give; it is how they love.

Reversed

Their care has become smothering, or they are depleted and giving from an empty well. Expect either too much attention or a sudden withdrawal of it. Ask what they need.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is fertility of every kind: shared creativity, physical warmth, a sense that life grows where the two of you are. The bond is abundant. Water it and it keeps bearing.

Reversed

You are joined by caretaking that has lost its balance, one nurturing and one being nurtured, or by a creativity that has gone quiet between you. Rebalance who tends whom.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Different appetites divide you: for comfort, for pleasure, for how much to give. One of you wants to grow things slowly and the other wants results. Neither is wrong; the pace needs agreeing.

Reversed

Smothering on one side or neglect on the other has opened the gap, or a creative drought has left you with nothing to make together. Tend the field before you argue about it.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the generous one: build slowly, give freely, let things ripen. It leads to abundance and asks patience and real care along the way. It is rarely fast and usually worth it.

Reversed

This road has you giving until nothing is left, or waiting for a harvest you have not planted. As it stands it leads to depletion or barrenness. Add rest and honest boundaries before you take it.
