The image

A horned, bat-winged figure squats on a black pedestal with an inverted pentagram on its brow, one hand raised and the other holding a torch pointed down. Below, a naked man and woman stand chained by the neck to the pedestal, with small horns and tails. The chains are loose enough to lift over their heads.

Upright meaning

The Devil is the thing you cannot stop doing and have stopped questioning. The couple are chained, but the chains hang loose; what holds them is the belief that this is where they belong. In a reading the card shows attachment, addiction, obsession, a relationship or habit that has become bondage, material fixation, and the shadow parts of yourself you have handed power to. It is not evil. It is the moment of noticing the chain.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the chain is lifted. The card shows release from a bond, awareness of a pattern that had been invisible, the breaking of a habit, reclaiming power from whatever had it, and the uncomfortable freedom of facing your own shadow instead of feeding it. It can also mark a relapse or the fear that comes just before letting go. The pedestal is still there. Walk away from it anyway.

The Devil: yes or no?

Upright
No
The Devil is a clear no for now: it points to bondage and attachment, and pressing ahead would cost more than it gives.
Reversed
Maybe
The Devil reversed softens a hard card into a maybe: release and awareness. The outcome depends on what you do next.

Reversed. Release from a hold that had you: leaving an unhealthy pattern, breaking a dependency, seeing clearly a dynamic you were inside. The chains were loose all along. Step out.

work and career

Upright. Bound to the job: golden handcuffs, a toxic workplace you cannot seem to leave, ambition that has become compulsion. Not all of it is bad; drive lives here too. Ask what holds you, and whether you chose it.

Reversed. Breaking free: leaving a role that had you trapped, dropping a habit of overwork, seeing a workplace dynamic clearly for the first time. The chains were loose. Step out.

money

Upright. Bound by money: debt, compulsive spending, a job kept only for the pay, a bargain you cannot get out of. Not all of it is bad; ambition lives here too. Ask whether you chose this or are chained to it.

Reversed. Breaking a financial hold: debt cleared, a compulsion loosened, a bad contract escaped. The chains were looser than they looked. Step out.

health and wellbeing

Upright. A habit with a hook: addiction, compulsion, a dependency you keep returning to. Not all appetite is bad; vitality lives here too. Ask whether you are choosing this or chained to it.

Reversed. Release from a hold: a dependency loosening, a pattern seen clearly, power reclaimed from something that had it. The chains were loose. Step out and keep walking.

family and home

Upright. Family patterns that bind: a dynamic you keep repeating, an obligation that has become a chain, a dependency inherited. Not all of it is bad; loyalty lives here too. Ask whether you chose it.

Reversed. Breaking a family pattern: leaving an unhealthy dynamic, loosening an obligation, seeing a household clearly for the first time. The chains were loose. Step out.

personal growth

Upright. Facing the shadow: habits, attachments, appetites and fears that hold you. Not all of it is bad; your vitality lives there too. The question is whether you are choosing it or chained to it.

Reversed. Release: a pattern seen clearly, a dependency loosened, power reclaimed from something that had it. The chains were loose. Step out and keep walking.

the spiritual path

Upright. The shadow: attachment, compulsion, the material bonds that hold the spirit. Not all of it is darkness; vitality lives there too. See the chains clearly and ask whether you chose them.

Reversed. Liberation: a bond seen through, a compulsion loosened, power reclaimed from what had it. The chains were loose. Step out and keep walking.

a decision

Upright. One option has a hook in it: it tempts, it binds, it is familiar. Not necessarily wrong; desire lives here. Ask whether you are choosing it or chained to it.

Reversed. Release from a bind you thought was a decision: the trap was never locked. You can step out of the option that held you.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Ravage, violence, vehemence, extraordinary efforts, force, fatality; that which is predestined but is not for this reason evil.”

Reversed: “Evil fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

The design is an accommodation, mean or harmony, between several motives mentioned in the first part. The Horned Goat of Mendes, with wings like those of a bat, is standing on an altar. At the pit of the stomach there is the sign of Mercury. The right hand is upraised and extended, being the reverse of that benediction which is given by the Hierophant in the fifth card. In the left hand there is a great flaming torch, inverted towards the earth. A reversed pentagram is on the forehead. There is a ring in front of the altar, from which two chains are carried to the necks of two figures, male and female. These are analogous with those of the fifth card, as if Adam and Eve after the Fall. Hereof is the chain and fatality of the material life. The figures are tailed, to signify the animal nature, but there is human intelligence in the faces, and he who is exalted above them is not to be their master for ever. Even now, he is also a bondsman, sustained by the evil that is in him and blind to the liberty of service. With more than his usual derision for the arts which he pretended to respect and interpret as a master therein, liphas Lvi affirms that the Baphometic figure is occult science and magic. Another commentator says that in the Divine world it signifies predestination, but there is no correspondence in that world with the things which below are of the brute. What it does signify is the Dweller on the Threshold without the Mystical Garden when those are driven forth therefrom who have eaten the forbidden fruit.

The Devil in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is a bondage you have stopped noticing: a habit, a relationship, a belief about yourself that holds you in place. The reading's work is to show you the chain is loose.

Reversed

You are at the point of lifting the chain. Something that held you is losing its grip, and you are beginning to see it for what it was. The matter is about walking away before the fear talks you back.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is an attachment or a compulsion that crosses every plan, yours or someone else's. It is the real obstacle, and it is wearing a disguise. Name it.

Reversed

The force across your path is a release that frightens you, or a habit fighting to stay. Something is trying to break free and something else is pulling it back. Side with the freeing.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from an attachment or a pattern of bondage, an addiction, an unhealthy bond, a shadow handed power long ago. The present matter rests on that pedestal.

Reversed

At the root is a chain you once broke, a release that taught you freedom is possible. That awareness is the ground beneath the present, even if a new chain has appeared.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of bondage, obsession or unhealthy attachment is receding. The chain has loosened. Do not reach for it out of habit.

Reversed

A stretch of breaking free or of facing your shadow is settling into the past. The work of release is largely done. The next stage is staying released.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want may be the very thing that binds you: more of the attachment, a tighter hold on what already holds you. Look at the goal honestly and ask who set it.

Reversed

You consciously want freedom from a pattern and are ready to see it clearly. That aim is right and the reading supports it. Lift the chain over your head; it fits.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A temptation or an attachment is coming, something that will offer comfort in exchange for freedom. Recognise the pedestal when you see it and remember the chains are loose.

Reversed

Release is ahead. A habit will break, a bond will loosen, a shadow will be seen and lose its power. Expect fear just before freedom, and walk through it.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are caught in something and partly comfortable there. Your desire for the chain is honest, and so is your wish to be free. Look at the shadow without flinching.

Reversed

Part of you is ready to let go and part is already missing the chain. Both are normal. Feed the first one and the second will quiet.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you is bound to a habit or a person in an unhealthy way, or the atmosphere itself is one of compulsion and material fixation. Do not take the chain that is offered.

Reversed

Your surroundings are loosening: someone is breaking a bond, a toxic pattern in a group is being named. The atmosphere now favours release. Help with the lifting.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You fear being trapped, and part of you hopes to stay trapped, because the chain is familiar and freedom is not. Seeing both at once is the first lift of the chain.

Reversed

You hope to be free of a pattern and fear who you will be without it. The card says you will be yourself, without horns. Hope for that and take the step.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

Left as it is, this ends in bondage continued: the habit kept, the attachment deepened, the chain hanging loose and unlifted. The spread shows where the shadow took power. Face it and the ending changes.

Reversed

This resolves in release: a chain lifted, a habit broken, power reclaimed from what held it. Keep walking from the pedestal and the result holds.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

An attachment is running this from below: a habit, a compulsion, a bond you have stopped questioning. The hidden influence is a chain you could lift and have not. Notice how loose it is.

Reversed

Beneath the surface something is loosening: a pattern becoming visible, a chain coming off. The hidden influence is awareness arriving, and the fear that comes just before freedom.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Look at what binds you and ask who put the chain on. Name the attachment honestly, including the comfort it gives. You do not have to break it today; you have to stop pretending it is not there.

Reversed

Lift the chain. The pattern is visible now and the pedestal has no hold on you but habit. Walk away from it before the fear talks you back, and expect to miss it for a while.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are bound to something, a habit, a person, a need for control, and it shapes how they show up with you. Expect attachment that can look like devotion and work like a chain. Do not take the matching collar.

Reversed

They are breaking free of something, or beginning to see a pattern they were blind to. Expect turbulence, relapse and real change in that order. Support the lifting, not the chain.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is attachment with a dark edge: need, habit, intensity, the comfort of a known chain. The bond is strong and it is not free. Ask whether either of you could lift the collar and stay.

Reversed

You are joined by a shared escape from something that held you both, or by one person's release that the other has not yet made. The chain is half off. Decide together whether to take it all the way.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

A compulsion divides you: an addiction, an obsession, a controlling pattern that one of you is caught in and the other can see. The chained one cannot be argued free. They can be told the truth and loved.

Reversed

A release has opened the gap: one of you is breaking a pattern and the other preferred the old arrangement. Freedom on one side feels like abandonment on the other. Be honest about which chain is being lifted.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is the one that binds: more of the attachment, a tighter hold on what already holds you. It leads to a comfortable captivity. If you take it, at least take it with your eyes open.

Reversed

This road lifts the chain: break the habit, leave the pedestal, reclaim your power. It leads to freedom and asks you to walk through fear to get there. It is the harder road and the only one that goes anywhere.
