The image

A richly dressed merchant stands holding a set of scales in one hand and dropping coins into the palm of a kneeling beggar with the other, while a second beggar kneels waiting. Six pentacles float in the air around them. The scales are level.

Upright meaning

The Six of Pentacles is the flow of resources from those who have to those who need, measured by the scales. It shows generosity, charity, fair pay, a loan or gift given freely, mentorship, and the recognition that giving and receiving are two ends of one movement. In a reading it asks which figure you are, and reminds you that you have been, and will be, each of them. The scales say the point is balance, not pity.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the scales tip and the coins come with conditions. The card shows generosity used to control, charity that humiliates, debt that cannot be repaid, a power imbalance disguised as kindness, or giving that is really buying. It can also mark receiving badly, taking without gratitude or resenting the hand that helps. The coins are still moving. Check what is attached to them.

Six of Pentacles: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Six of Pentacles leans yes, on the strength of generosity and giving and receiving, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
Six of Pentacles reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but strings attached and imbalance of power delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Presents, gifts, gratification another account says attention, vigilance now is the accepted time, present prosperity, etc.”

Reversed: “Desire, cupidity, envy, jealousy, illusion.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A person in the guise of a merchant weighs money in a pair of scales and distributes it to the needy and distressed. It is a testimony to his own success in life, as well as to his goodness of heart.

Six of Pentacles in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is an exchange of resources: you are giving, receiving, or deciding how to do either fairly. The scales are in your hand. The reading is about keeping them level.

Reversed

At the heart of this is a gift or a debt with strings, a kindness that has become a lever. The matter turns on seeing the power imbalance plainly and deciding whether to stay in it.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a question of fairness: who gives, who gets, what is owed. Someone's generosity, or need, is reshaping the matter. Weigh it honestly.

Reversed

The force across your path is a conditional kindness or an imbalance of power, someone who gives in order to hold you. Until the strings are named, the help is a hook.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from generosity, a gift, a loan or a mentor who shared what they had at the right moment. That fair exchange is the ground beneath the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is a debt or a dependency, help that came with control or charity that cost your dignity. The present carries the weight of that uneven exchange.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of giving or receiving generously is receding. The exchange is complete and the scales have settled. What was given has done its work.

Reversed

A stretch of imbalance, debt or conditional help is losing its hold. The strings are loosening. Do not re-attach them out of gratitude.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is fairness: to give what you can, receive what you need, and have the scales come out level. That is achievable here and the circumstances support it.

Reversed

You may be aiming to be the benefactor so as to be owed, or to be rescued so as not to have to earn. Make the goal a fair exchange rather than a position above or below.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

Generosity is coming your way, or you will be in a position to give it. A gift, a loan, a fair deal, a mentor. Receive it well, or give it without keeping accounts.

Reversed

A conditional offer lies ahead, help that will cost more than it appears to, or a debt coming due. Read the terms. Say no to anything that puts you on your knees.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are generous and fair-minded, aware of what you have and willing to share it. That balance is your contribution here. Keep the scales where you can see them.

Reversed

Part of you gives in order to be needed, or receives with resentment. Notice which figure you are playing and whether the coins are a gift or a transaction.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are generous and fair, and resources are flowing where they are needed. Someone may be ready to help you, or to be helped by you. The atmosphere is kind.

Reversed

Your surroundings run on obligation: favours that bind, help that controls, a hierarchy of who owes whom. Keep your own exchanges clean and your gratitude free.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope for fairness, to be helped when you need it and to help when you can, and may fear being the one on your knees. The card says both figures are honourable. The shame is in the scales, not the kneeling.

Reversed

You fear being controlled through kindness, or fear that your own giving is not as free as you claim, and part of you may hope to be rescued so you need not earn. Look at the strings before you take the coins.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in a fair exchange: generosity given and received, resources shared, the scales level. Keep giving and taking honestly and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in a debt or a dependency, kindness that turns out to be a leash. The spread shows where the scales tipped. Level them and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

An exchange of resources is shaping this from underneath: who gives, who receives, what is owed. The hidden influence is a scale someone is holding, and it is more level than the surface tension suggests.

Reversed

Beneath this is a gift with strings, or a debt one party has not acknowledged. The hidden influence is a power imbalance disguised as generosity. Check what is attached to the coins.

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Give what you can and receive what you need, keeping the scales in view. Generosity here is practical and fair. Remember you have been, and will be, both figures in the picture.

Reversed

Read the terms. If help comes with control, name it; if you are giving to be owed, stop. The advice is a clean exchange, with no one on their knees.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are generous, fair and in a position to help, or honestly in need of it. Expect a straightforward exchange and an eye for balance. Give or receive without keeping accounts.

Reversed

Their generosity comes with strings, or their need comes with resentment, and the exchange is about power more than help. Expect a leash in the coins. Decline anything that puts you on your knees.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is fair exchange: you help each other without scorekeeping and the balance keeps finding its level. The bond is generous in both directions. Keep the scales where you can both see them.

Reversed

You are joined by debt or dependency, help that has become leverage, or giving that is really buying. The scales are tipped and both of you know it. Level them or the bond becomes a transaction.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Fairness divides you: who gives more, who owes whom, whether the scales are level. One feels unappreciated as a giver; the other feels diminished as a receiver. Compare the ledgers openly, then burn them.

Reversed

A conditional gift or an unspoken debt has opened the gap: something given with strings, something taken with resentment. The division is about power dressed as kindness. Say what was really attached.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road gives and receives fairly: help where you can, accept help where you need it, keep the exchange honest. It leads to balance and asks that you let yourself be either figure. It is the road of level scales.

Reversed

This road accepts help with strings or gives to be owed. It leads to a leash and a dependency. Read the terms before you take it, and refuse the ones that kneel you.
