The image
A man tiptoes away from a camp of bright tents carrying five swords awkwardly in his arms, looking back over his shoulder with a sly smile. Two swords remain stuck in the ground behind him. In the distance a small group of soldiers has not yet noticed.
Upright meaning
The Seven of Swords is the clever plan carried out alone. The man has taken most of the swords and left two behind, which may be cunning or may be the limit of what he could carry. In a reading it shows strategy, discretion, working around a problem instead of through it, and sometimes deceit or theft. It can be the right card for a situation that calls for quiet tactics, and the wrong one for a life that has come to rely on them.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the soldiers turn around. The card shows a scheme exposed, a secret coming out, the choice to come clean before you are caught, or the dawning realisation that you have mainly been deceiving yourself. It can also mark a change of tactics after a plan unravels. The two swords in the ground are the ones you left behind: honesty and help. Go back for them.
Seven of Swords: yes or no?
- Upright
- No
- Seven of Swords leans no: strategy and stealth stand in the way as things are.
- Reversed
- Maybe
- Seven of Swords reversed softens a hard card into a maybe: exposure and coming clean. The outcome depends on what you do next.
Seven of Swords by topic
How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.
love and relationships
Upright. Strategy or secrecy in love: someone acting alone, keeping something back, managing the relationship rather than living it. Not always malicious, rarely healthy. Ask what the discretion is for.
Reversed. Exposure: a secret surfacing, a deception coming to light, or a decision to stop sneaking and be plain. Honesty costs less than you feared. Come back for the swords you left.
work and career
Upright. Strategy or secrecy: a solo move, a competitor's manoeuvre, information kept back. Not always wrong, rarely comfortable. Know what the discretion is for and whom it costs.
Reversed. Exposure: a scheme found out, a shortcut that caught up with someone, or a decision to stop manoeuvring and deal plainly. Honesty costs less than you feared.
money
Upright. Secrecy or strategy with money: an undisclosed account, a clever move, something taken that was not quite yours. Not always wrong, rarely comfortable. Know what the discretion costs.
Reversed. Exposure: a hidden cost or a hidden deal coming to light, or a decision to stop manoeuvring and deal plainly. Honesty is cheaper than you feared.
health and wellbeing
Upright. Secrecy about your health: a habit hidden, a symptom not mentioned, getting away with something. Rarely wise. Ask what the discretion is costing you.
Reversed. Exposure: a hidden habit seen, a shortcut that caught up with you, or a decision to stop sneaking and be plain with your doctor and yourself.
family and home
Upright. Secrecy at home: a relative acting alone, something kept from the family, a plan made without telling anyone. Not always malicious, rarely healthy. Ask what the discretion is for.
Reversed. A family secret surfacing, or a decision to stop sneaking and be plain with the household. Honesty costs less than you feared.
personal growth
Upright. Self-deception or strategy: a part of you acting alone, keeping something back, getting away with it. Not always wrong, rarely honest. Ask what the discretion is hiding.
Reversed. Exposure: a self-deception seen through, a shortcut that caught up with you, or a decision to stop sneaking and be plain with yourself. Honesty costs less than you feared.
the spiritual path
Upright. Self-deception on the path: a part of you acting alone, keeping something back, getting away with it. Spiritual bypassing, cleverness instead of honesty. Ask what the discretion hides.
Reversed. The bypass exposed: a comfortable half-truth seen through, or a choice to stop sneaking around the hard part of the practice. Plain honesty with yourself costs less than you feared.
a decision
Upright. A strategic option, a clever move, something taken quietly. Not always wrong, rarely comfortable. Know what the discretion costs and whom.
Reversed. Exposure: the clever option found out, or a decision to stop manoeuvring and deal plainly. Honesty costs less than you feared.
Waite’s divinatory meanings
Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.
Upright: “Design, attempt, wish, hope, confidence; also quarrelling, a plan that may fail, annoyance. The design is uncertain in its import, because the significations are widely at variance with each other.”
Reversed: “Good advice, counsel, instruction, slander, babbling.”

A man in the act of carrying away five swords rapidly; the two others of the card remain stuck in the ground. A camp is close at hand.
Seven of Swords in a spread
How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.
The Significator
What is at the heart of the matter right now?
At the centre of your situation is a strategy you are carrying out quietly and on your own. It may be shrewd or it may be sneaky. The reading is about whether the cleverness serves you.
At the heart of this is a plan coming undone, or a secret that will not stay kept. The matter turns on whether you confess it or wait to be found out.
Crossing Card
What crosses, challenges or shapes it?
What meets your situation is cunning: someone working behind the scenes, or your own temptation to take a shortcut. Trust is thin here. Check what has gone missing.
The force across your path is exposure or the cost of a shortcut already taken. Something hidden is surfacing. Meet it with honesty before it meets you.
Foundation
What is the root of this?
This grew from a strategic or secretive move, something done quietly to get around an obstacle. The present matter rests on that manoeuvre and on whatever it left behind.
At the root is a deception that came out, or a time when you fooled yourself about what you were doing. The present carries the aftermath of that exposure.
Recent Past
What is passing out of the picture?
A period of scheming or going it alone is receding. Whatever was taken has been taken. What follows asks for openness that the tiptoeing phase could not afford.
A stretch of exposure, or of unravelling plans, is losing its hold. The secret is out and the sky has not fallen. Rebuild in the open.
Crown
What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?
What you consciously want may be to get away with something, to win by cleverness without confrontation. It is possible. Ask whether it is a victory you could tell anyone about.
You consciously want to be honest and to stop managing a secret. That aim is right, and the relief will be larger than the cost. Choose the moment and come clean.
Future
What is coming next?
A situation requiring strategy is coming, or someone around you will act deceptively. Keep your own counsel, count your swords, and avoid shortcuts you would have to hide.
A hidden matter is about to come to light, yours or another's. Prepare to be honest or to hear something you were not told. The reckoning is manageable if it is met directly.
Emotions
How are you meeting this, inside?
Inwardly, you are calculating and self-reliant, inclined to handle this alone and quietly. Those are skills. Make sure they are not also a way of avoiding anyone who could help.
Part of you knows a scheme is failing or that you have been fooling yourself about your reasons. Listen to that part. It is trying to save you the soldiers.
External Forces
What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?
Someone around you is acting in secret, perhaps against your interests, perhaps simply for their own. The atmosphere is one of quiet manoeuvring. Guard your swords and say little.
Your surroundings are shifting as hidden dealings come to light. Someone's cover is slipping. Keep your own hands visible and let the exposure do its work.
Hopes & Desires
What do you hope for, and what do you fear?
You hope to slip through this cleverly and without a fight, and you fear being caught. Both say you doubt the plan would survive daylight. Consider one that would.
You fear exposure and may half-hope for it, since being found out would end the strain of hiding. Choose the confession over the discovery; it leaves you with more.
Outcome
Where does all of this lead?
This resolves by strategy: a goal reached through quiet manoeuvre, a problem bypassed rather than fought. It works, and it leaves two swords behind. Decide if you can live with that.
Left as it is, this ends in exposure: a plan unravelled, a secret revealed, a shortcut that cost more than the long road. The spread shows where honesty was left in the ground. Pick it up now and the ending changes.
Hidden Influences
What is at work here that you cannot see yet?
Strategy is running this from below: someone is working quietly, possibly around you rather than with you, and the appearance of the situation is not the whole of it. The hidden influence is cunning. Count your swords.
Beneath the surface a scheme is coming undone, or a self-deception is wearing thin. The hidden influence is a secret about to surface. Better to bring it out than to be caught with it.
Advice
What should you do about it?
Be strategic and discreet. Work around the obstacle rather than through it, keep your own counsel, and avoid any shortcut you would have to hide. Cleverness is fine; cleverness you cannot admit is not.
Come clean before you are found out, and go back for the two swords you left in the ground: honesty and help. The advice is to change tactics from quiet manoeuvre to plain dealing.
The Other Person
What are they bringing to this?
They are working quietly on their own plan, discreet at best and sneaky at worst. Expect strategy rather than openness. Trust carefully and check what has gone missing.
Their plan is unravelling, or a secret of theirs is surfacing, or they are facing their own self-deception. Expect exposure and perhaps a confession. Meet honesty with honesty; do not gloat.
What Joins You
What holds the two of you together?
What joins you is a shared strategy, a quiet alliance that works around the world together. It is clever and close. Make sure you are not also working around each other.
You are joined by a secret, kept between you or kept from one of you, and the exposure is coming. The bond will either survive the daylight or it will not. Bring it into the light yourselves.
What Divides You
What pulls the two of you apart?
Secrecy divides you: one works quietly and alone and the other feels managed rather than included. Discretion on one side reads as deceit on the other. Share the plan before the soldiers turn around.
A deception exposed has opened the gap: a shortcut taken, a half-truth found out. The division is trust. It is rebuilt by the one who hid something, slowly, in the open.
A Path
What happens if you take this road?
This road is the clever one: manoeuvre, bypass, act alone and discreetly. It leads to a goal reached quietly and leaves two swords behind. Take it only if you could tell the story afterwards.
This road exposes the scheme, by choice or by discovery. It leads to a reckoning that is smaller if you choose it. Confess rather than be caught, and the road becomes a clean one.
