The image

A queen sits in profile on a throne carved with a winged figure and butterflies, her sword held perfectly upright in one hand and the other hand raised, open, as if to say: speak. Clouds gather at the base of the picture but her head is in clear sky. A single bird flies above her.

Upright meaning

The Queen of Swords is clarity that has been paid for. She has known loss, and instead of making her bitter it has made her honest. She sees through pretence, says what is true, and expects the same from you, but the open hand says she is listening. In a reading she shows candour, independence, firm boundaries, the wisdom of experience, and a person who will tell you the truth because she respects you enough to.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the open hand closes. The card shows honesty hardened into cruelty, boundaries built into walls, judgement without mercy, or a bitterness that treats every softness as weakness. It can mark someone whose words cut for the pleasure of cutting, or a person so defended by intellect that no one can reach them. The sword is still true. The hand needs to open again.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Widowhood, female sadness and embarrassment, absence, sterility, mourning, privation, separation.”

Reversed: “Malice, bigotry, artifice, prudery, bale, deceit.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

Her right hand raises the weapon vertically and the hilt rests on an arm of her royal chair the left hand is extended, the arm raised her countenance is severe but chastened; it suggests familiarity with sorrow. It does not represent mercy, and, her sword notwithstanding, she is scarcely a symbol of power.

Queen of Swords in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is your own clear sight. You see this matter without illusion and you are prepared to say so. The reading is about keeping the truth kind without making it soft.

Reversed

At the heart of this is a sharpness that has become coldness, or a judgement delivered without the open hand. The matter turns on whether honesty is serving the situation or just wounding it.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is an honest, exacting influence, perhaps a woman who will not let you fool yourself. Her clarity may feel severe. It is also the most useful thing in the spread.

Reversed

The force across your path is harsh judgement or cold words, yours or another's. Someone is being cruel in the name of truth. Until the hand opens, nothing heals.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from hard experience that taught you to see clearly and speak plainly. That earned honesty is the ground beneath the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is a wound that turned to bitterness, a time when loss made you cold rather than clear. The present carries that frozen edge.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of clear judgement and candid speech is receding. The truth has been told and the boundaries set. What follows asks for warmth to rejoin the clarity.

Reversed

A stretch of coldness, harsh words or isolation is losing its hold. The bitterness is thawing. Let the hand open.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to see this clearly and handle it with honesty and independence. That aim is right and the circumstances support it. Keep the listening hand raised.

Reversed

You may be aiming at being right rather than at being truthful with care, or at a self-sufficiency that needs no one. Revise the goal so that it includes being reached.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A clear-eyed influence is coming, perhaps a woman of experience, perhaps your own judgement sharpening. Expect frank conversation and useful boundaries. Welcome both.

Reversed

A cold or cutting exchange lies ahead, or a period when you are tempted toward bitterness. Say what is true and leave out what is only sharp.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are honest, discerning and independent. That clear judgement is your strength here. Add the open hand and it becomes wisdom.

Reversed

Part of you has gone cold, judging others and yourself without mercy. Notice when precision becomes punishment. The truth does not need the extra edge.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you, often an experienced and candid woman, is a truthful ally who will not flatter you. The atmosphere favours honesty. Take the counsel.

Reversed

Someone in your circle is harsh, critical or coldly withholding, and the atmosphere is sharp. Do not absorb the bitterness. Keep your own hand open.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to see clearly and be dealt with honestly, and may fear that the truth will be lonely. The card says clarity and connection are not opposites. The bird still flies.

Reversed

You fear being judged coldly, or fear your own bitterness, and part of you may hope to need no one. Notice that wish for isolation. It is a wound talking, not a plan.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves through honesty: a truth clearly seen and spoken, boundaries respected, independence kept with grace. Keep the open hand and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in coldness: a truth that wounds, a bond cut by bitterness, a clarity no one can bear to be near. The spread shows where the hand closed. Open it and the ending changes.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A clear-eyed judgement is being made beneath the surface, probably by someone who has been hurt before and learned to see straight. The hidden influence is honesty with the hand still open. It is more generous than it sounds.

Reversed

Beneath this is bitterness dressed as realism, or a judgement passed without mercy and not yet spoken. The hidden influence is a closed hand. The truth is still true; the edge is extra.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

See clearly and speak plainly, with the open hand raised. Set the boundary, say the true thing, and leave room for the other person to answer. Clarity and kindness are not opposites here.

Reversed

Take the extra edge off. The advice is to say what is true and leave out what is only sharp, and to notice when precision has become punishment, of others or of yourself.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are honest, discerning and independent, with boundaries earned the hard way. Expect truth without flattery and attention without sentiment. Take the counsel; it is given out of respect.

Reversed

They are cold, critical or bitter, cutting with words and defended by intellect so that no one reaches them. Expect judgement without the open hand. Do not absorb it; keep your own hand open.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is honesty: you see each other clearly, say so, and respect each other's independence. The bond has a clean edge. Keep the listening hand up and it stays a kindness.

Reversed

You are joined by judgement, each keeping an exact account of the other's failings, or by a shared bitterness toward the world. The hand has closed between you. Open it with one unguarded sentence.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Candour divides you: one says the truth plainly and the other needs it cushioned, and honesty reads as harshness while gentleness reads as evasion. Both are forms of respect. Say the true thing more slowly.

Reversed

Coldness or cruelty with words has opened the gap: a judgement delivered to wound, a bitterness one of you brought from somewhere else. The division is the closed hand. Open it, and the blade becomes a tool again.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is honesty with grace: see clearly, speak plainly, keep the open hand. It leads to boundaries respected and truth that heals rather than cuts. It is the road of the clear sky above the clouds.

Reversed

This road is honesty without mercy, or independence that needs no one. It leads to isolation and a truth no one can bear to be near. Take the edge off before you take the road.
