The image

A young page stands on high ground with a sword raised in both hands, body turned one way and head sharply the other, as if listening for something behind. Wind drives ragged clouds across the sky and bends the trees below. The stance is alert and a little unsteady.

Upright meaning

The Page of Swords is the mind waking up. He wants to know everything, watches everyone, and has not yet learned which questions are kind. In a reading the card shows curiosity, mental energy, vigilance, news or messages, a young or quick-witted person, and the eagerness to understand that precedes the ability to judge. He is useful when there is something to find out and tiring when there is not.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the sword swings carelessly. The card shows gossip, words spoken too fast, defensiveness that mistakes every question for an attack, snooping, or cleverness turned to small cruelties. It can mark a person who talks about people rather than to them. The alertness is still an asset; it needs a conscience and a pause before speaking.

Upright
Maybe
Page of Swords answers neither yes nor no: it points to curiosity and vigilance, and the answer turns on choices still to be made.
Reversed
Maybe
Page of Swords reversed softens a hard card into a maybe: gossip and defensiveness. The outcome depends on what you do next.

Page of Swords by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. Curiosity and watchfulness: a new interest you are studying from a distance, questions you want answered, honest conversation sought. Ask directly; the wind favours plain speech.

Reversed. Gossip, defensiveness, reading hidden meanings into everything. Suspicion is standing in for conversation. Put down the phone and ask the person, not the group chat.

work and career

Upright. Curiosity and vigilance: a new field studied, questions asked, information gathered before a move. Communication is the work right now. Ask directly; the wind favours plain speech.

Reversed. Gossip, defensiveness, misread signals: suspicion standing in for conversation, careless words with consequences. Put the message down and ask the person.

money

Upright. Research before a money decision: questions asked, terms read, options compared. Information is the asset right now. Ask directly; the wind favours plain speech.

Reversed. Gossip or suspicion about money, careless words with financial consequences, defensiveness instead of facts. Put the message down and ask the adviser.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Curiosity about your health: questions asked, research done, a second opinion sought. Information is the medicine right now. Ask directly.

Reversed. Overthinking symptoms, searching late at night, suspicion standing in for consultation. Put the phone down and ask the professional.

family and home

Upright. Curiosity and honest questions within the family: a child asking, a relative studied from a distance, a conversation sought. Ask directly; plain speech is favoured.

Reversed. Family gossip, defensiveness, reading hidden meanings into every message. Suspicion is standing in for conversation. Ask the relative, not the group chat.

personal growth

Upright. Curiosity and watchfulness: questions asked, ideas tested, a mind alert and learning. Study the thing honestly. The wind favours plain speech, including with yourself.

Reversed. Overthinking, defensiveness, suspicion standing in for understanding. You are arguing with shadows. Put the sword down and ask the real question.

the spiritual path

Upright. The inquiring mind on the path: questions asked, teachings tested, discernment practised. Study the thing honestly. The wind favours plain speech with yourself.

Reversed. Overthinking the sacred, defensiveness, suspicion standing in for understanding. You are arguing with shadows. Put the sword down and ask the real question.

a decision

Upright. Gather information before deciding: ask the questions, read the terms, watch carefully. Curiosity is the right posture now. Ask directly.

Reversed. Overthinking, suspicion, reading hidden meanings into every option. Put the sword down and ask the person who knows.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Authority, overseeing, secret service, vigilance, spying, examination, and the qualities thereto belonging.”

Reversed: “More evil side of these qualities; what is unforeseen, unprepared state; sickness is also intimated.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A lithe, active figure holds a sword upright in both hands, while in the act of swift walking. He is passing over rugged land, and about his way the clouds are collocated wildly. He is alert and lithe, looking this way and that, as if an expected enemy might appear at any moment.

Page of Swords in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is a need to find out. You are watching, asking, testing the wind, and the reading is about turning that alertness into understanding rather than mere suspicion.

Reversed

At the heart of this is careless talk or defensive sharpness, yours or someone else's. Words are being used fast and badly. The matter turns on slowing them down.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is scrutiny: questions being asked, information sought, someone watching closely. It can feel intrusive. Treat it as a chance to be clear rather than a threat.

Reversed

The force across your path is gossip or a quick tongue, someone spreading half-truths or taking offence at everything. Do not answer in kind.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from curiosity and quick thinking, a time when you asked the right questions and learned fast. That alertness is the ground beneath the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is a hurt caused by careless words, or a habit of defensiveness learned early. The present carries that reflex of striking first.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of questioning, watching and gathering information is receding. You have found out what you needed to. The next stage asks for judgement rather than more data.

Reversed

A stretch of gossip, defensiveness or hasty words is losing its hold. The sharp exchanges are ending. Let the last word go unspoken.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is to understand, to have the facts and see the situation clearly. That is achievable here and the circumstances favour inquiry. Ask directly.

Reversed

You may be aiming at being the one who knows, or at winning exchanges rather than understanding them. Make the goal truth rather than cleverness.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

News or new information is coming, perhaps through a young or quick-witted person. Questions will arise that need answering. Stay alert and keep your footing.

Reversed

A careless remark or a piece of gossip lies ahead and may cause trouble. Watch what you say and from whom you accept reports. Verify before you repeat.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are curious, alert and quick. That mental energy is useful here, provided you add patience and let the answers come before you act on them.

Reversed

Part of you is defensive and quick to cut, mistaking every question for a challenge. Lower the sword a little. Not everyone behind you is an enemy.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are curious and talkative, and information is moving fast. Someone young or sharp may bring you useful news. Listen more than you speak.

Reversed

Your surroundings are full of gossip and sharp edges. Someone may be watching you or talking about you. Keep your own words careful and your business private.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to understand what is going on, and fear what you might find out. Both say you suspect something. Ask the question directly; it will cost less than guessing.

Reversed

You fear being talked about or caught out, and part of you may hope to defend yourself by striking first. Notice that impulse. Silence is often the sharper sword.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in understanding gained: questions answered, information found, a clear view of the situation. Keep watching and asking, and the result holds.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in words that wound: gossip, a hasty remark, a defensive cut that costs a relationship. The spread shows where the tongue outran the mind. Slow it and the ending changes.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

Curiosity is at work beneath this: someone is watching, asking and gathering information, perhaps about you, perhaps for you. The hidden influence is a mind that has not yet decided what to do with what it knows.

Reversed

Beneath the surface are careless words, gossip or a defensiveness that mistakes every question for an attack. The hidden influence is a sword swung too fast. Something was said that should not have been.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Find out. Ask the direct question, watch the wind, gather the facts before you judge. Stay alert and stay kind; the sword is for cutting through confusion, not people.

Reversed

Slow your tongue and check your sources. The advice is to say less, verify more, and to lower the sword when a question comes; not everyone behind you is an enemy.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are curious, sharp and alert, full of questions and quick observations. Expect news, scrutiny and a certain restlessness. Answer plainly and they will respect it.

Reversed

They are gossiping, defensive or talking faster than they think, and may be watching you more than you would like. Expect sharp edges and half-truths. Keep your business private and your words careful.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a lively curiosity about each other and the world: you ask, you notice, you trade information. The bond is alert and talkative. Make sure some of the talk is listening.

Reversed

You are joined by sharp exchanges, by talking about each other rather than to each other, or by a defensiveness that keeps both swords up. Lower one and ask a real question.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Scrutiny divides you: one asks questions and the other feels interrogated. Curiosity reads as suspicion; privacy reads as evasion. Agree what is open and what is not.

Reversed

Careless words have opened the gap: gossip that got back, a remark made too quickly, a defensive cut. The division is a wound from the tongue. Apologise specifically and say less for a while.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road finds out first: ask, watch, verify, then act. It leads to understanding and asks patience with the answers. It is the alert road and it keeps you from the expensive mistake.

Reversed

This road acts on gossip or speaks before thinking. It leads to words that wound and facts that were wrong. Verify, and slow the tongue, before you take it.
