The image

A knight in winged helmet and winged boots rides slowly on a white horse, holding a cup before him as if presenting it. His armour is decorated with fish and his horse walks rather than charges. A narrow river winds through dry country behind him.

Upright meaning

The Knight of Cups is feeling in motion, the heart riding out to make an offer. He is the proposal, the love letter, the invitation, the artist who shows you the work. He moves slowly because what he carries spills easily. In a reading the card shows romance arriving, an offer made in good faith, a person who follows the heart and brings charm with him, and the readiness to act on a feeling rather than merely have it.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the cup tips and the knight's charm turns to performance. The card shows idealism that cannot survive contact with real life, a lover who is hot then cold, a proposal that does not hold, or seduction in place of sincerity. It can also mark your own tendency to fall in love with a picture. The horse still walks; ask where it is actually going.

Knight of Cups: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
Knight of Cups leans yes, on the strength of romance and an offer, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
Knight of Cups reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but unrealistic idealism and hot and cold delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Arrival, approach--sometimes that of a messenger; advances, proposition, demeanour, invitation, incitement.”

Reversed: “Trickery, artifice, subtlety, swindling, duplicity, fraud.”

Graceful, but not warlike; riding quietly, wearing a winged helmet, referring to those higher graces of the imagination which sometimes characterize this card. He too is a dreamer, but the images of the side of sense haunt him in his vision.

Knight of Cups in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is an offer from the heart, being made or received. You are the knight or the one he rides toward, and the matter is about romance, invitation and feeling made into action.

Reversed

At the heart of this is a feeling that will not settle into a reliable shape: an offer that wavers, a romance that runs hot and cold, an ideal that reality keeps failing. Steadiness is what is missing.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a romantic or emotional proposal, perhaps from a charming person who is involved. It can distract from practical matters, but it is also the thing you are secretly deciding about.

Reversed

The force across your path is unreliable feeling: someone whose promises outrun their follow-through, or your own habit of falling for a picture. Until that is faced, nothing here can be trusted.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a romance or an offer made in good faith, a time when someone followed their heart toward you or you toward them. That gesture still underlies the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is an idealised love that did not survive reality, or a proposal that was made and withdrawn. The present difficulty carries that disappointed idealism.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of courtship, romance or heartfelt offers is receding. The knight has delivered the cup and the next stage is less about gesture and more about what you do with it.

Reversed

A time of mixed messages, broken promises or unrealistic hopes about someone is losing its hold. The charm has worn off. You can see the person now rather than the knight.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously hope for is romance: an offer made or accepted, a love that moves toward you. That is a real possibility here, if you are as sincere as you want the other person to be.

Reversed

You may be aiming at an ideal of love rather than at an actual person, or hoping to be swept away so that you do not have to choose. Make the goal someone you could live beside.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

An offer or an invitation is coming, carried by someone charming or by your own courage. It may be romantic, creative or simply kind. Receive it with an open hand and a clear head.

Reversed

A proposal is coming that will not hold, or a person who will promise more than they deliver. Enjoy the gesture, but wait for the follow-through before you build on it.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are ready to act on your feelings and make the offer yourself. Your sincerity and willingness to be seen wanting are strengths here. Ride slowly and the cup stays full.

Reversed

Part of you is in love with the idea of love, or is wavering between advance and retreat. Ask whether you want this person or the feeling of pursuing them.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you is romantic, idealistic and well-meaning, and may be about to make you an offer. The people near you are warm. Your surroundings favour courtship and creative invitation.

Reversed

Someone in your circle is charming and unreliable, all gesture and little substance, and may be stringing you or someone else along. The atmosphere is seductive. Keep your judgement.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope to be courted, chosen and swept up, or to find the courage to make the offer yourself. The fear underneath is of being refused. Both tell you that this is a matter of the heart and should be treated as one.

Reversed

You fear being deceived by charm, or that your own feelings are more fantasy than love, and part of you may hope for a rescue that spares you the deciding. Notice the wish for rescue; it is the thing to let go of.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in an offer accepted: a romance begun or renewed, a proposal that holds, a feeling carried into action. Stay sincere and the result follows.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in a proposal that fails or a romance that runs out when the ideal meets the ordinary. The spread shows where the knight was trusted over the person. Trusting the person instead can still change the ending.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

An offer from the heart is being made or prepared beneath the surface, a romance or an invitation not yet spoken. The hidden influence is a knight already riding toward you, slowly, cup held level.

Reversed

Beneath this is idealism that will not survive contact, or charm doing the work that sincerity should. The hidden influence is a picture of love steering in place of the person. Check which you are following.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Make the offer. Act on the feeling, sincerely and without hurry, and present it as plainly as the knight presents his cup. If you are the one receiving, take it with an open hand and a clear head.

Reversed

Separate the person from the picture. The advice is to stop falling for an ideal, or to stop performing one; wait for follow-through before you build, and give follow-through before you promise.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are romantic, sincere and about to make you an offer, or already making one. Expect charm with real feeling behind it. Receive it in the spirit given, then watch how it holds.

Reversed

They are charming and unreliable right now, hot then cold, promising more than they deliver, or in love with an idea of you. Expect gestures. Wait for the horse to keep walking before you trust it.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is romance that was acted on: an offer made and accepted, feeling carried into gesture. The bond began as a cup held out. Keep making the offer; it is the vow in motion.

Reversed

You are joined by an ideal of each other that the real people keep failing, or by gestures that outrun substance. The knight is all presentation. Trust the person, not the picture, and see what remains.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Romance divides you: one wants the gesture and the other wants the steadiness, and the knight feels unappreciated while the practical one feels courted rather than known. Both are love. Alternate the languages.

Reversed

Unreliability or idealism has opened the gap: a proposal that did not hold, a love for a picture that the person could not sustain. The division is between the knight and the man or woman. Meet the real one.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road makes the offer: declare the feeling, propose, invite. It leads to romance that can become something lasting and asks sincerity in the gesture. Ride slowly and the cup stays full.

Reversed

This road follows charm or an ideal. It leads to a proposal that fails when reality arrives. Before you take it, ask whether you want this person or the feeling of pursuing them.
