The image

A king sits on a throne carved with bulls, in robes embroidered with grapevines, one hand resting on a pentacle balanced on his knee and the other holding a sceptre. Vines and fruit surround him, and a castle rises behind. His foot rests on a carved animal head and he looks ahead, settled and unhurried.

Upright meaning

The King of Pentacles is wealth that has become stewardship. He built the estate and now he runs it, and his success shows in the vines around him rather than in anything he says. In a reading he shows prosperity, stability, business acumen, generosity from a position of plenty, and a person who provides for others because he can and because it is what the position is for. He is the patron, the good employer, the parent who leaves a house.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the stewardship curdles into possession. The card shows greed, rigidity, wealth hoarded rather than used, control exercised through money, or a fear of risk so complete that the estate stops growing. It can mark a man who measures everyone by what they own, or a stability that has become a cage. The vines still bear fruit. Ask whom it is for.

King of Pentacles: yes or no?

Upright
Yes
King of Pentacles leans yes, on the strength of prosperity and stability, though it asks something of you in return.
Reversed
Not yet
King of Pentacles reversed is a yes held back. The promise of the upright card is there, but greed and rigidity delay it; the timing or the approach needs to change first.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “Valour, realizing intelligence, business and normal intellectual aptitude, sometimes mathematical gifts and attainments of this kind; success in these paths.”

Reversed: “Vice, weakness, ugliness, perversity, corruption, peril.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

The figure calls for no special description the face is rather dark, suggesting also courage, but somewhat lethargic in tendency. The bull's head should be noted as a recurrent symbol on the throne. The sign of this suit is represented throughout as engraved or blazoned with the pentagram, typifying the correspondence of the four elements in human nature and that by which they may be governed. In many old Tarot packs this suit stood for current coin, money, deniers. I have not invented the substitution of pentacles and I have no special cause to sustain in respect of the alternative. But the consensus of divinatory meanings is on the side of some change, because the cards do not happen to deal especially with questions of money.

King of Pentacles in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is solid, mature prosperity, or the role of steward over something valuable. You are the king on the estate. The reading is about ruling it generously.

Reversed

At the heart of this is wealth or control held too tightly: greed, rigidity, or a security that has stopped serving anyone. The matter turns on what the estate is for.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a powerful, practical influence, perhaps a wealthy or established person whose support or approval matters. Their caution may slow you. Their resources could carry you.

Reversed

The force across your path is material control or greed, someone using money as leverage, or your own fear of risk dressed as prudence. The estate has become the obstacle.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from solid material success and good stewardship, perhaps a provider or a mentor who built something lasting. That prosperity is the ground beneath the present matter.

Reversed

At the root is wealth that was controlling or a security that was rigid, a time when money meant power over you. The present carries that heaviness.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of prosperity and stable management is receding, not into loss but into change: the estate passes to new hands or new uses. What was built remains.

Reversed

A stretch of greed, rigidity or stubborn control is losing its hold. The grip is easing. Do not replace one kind of hoarding with another.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is lasting prosperity and the standing to provide for others. That is achievable here and the circumstances favour steady enterprise. Build for the vines, not the throne.

Reversed

You may be aiming at wealth as proof of worth, or at a security so total that it excludes any risk. Make the goal a generous estate rather than a locked one.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A prosperous, stable influence is coming: a successful venture, a generous patron, a position of material responsibility. Accept it as stewardship. It will reward patience.

Reversed

You are heading toward a clash with someone controlling through money, or toward a rigid decision of your own that blocks growth. Loosen the grip before the vines stop bearing.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are grounded, capable and generous from a place of real competence. That steady authority is what this matter needs. Keep the sceptre light.

Reversed

Part of you is grasping or rigid, measuring the situation only in what can be kept. Notice when prudence has become fear. The estate was built by taking risks.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

Someone around you, often an established and generous man, is a stable source of support and sound advice. The atmosphere is prosperous. Accept the patronage without losing your own direction.

Reversed

Someone in your circle, probably with money or authority, is controlling or stingy, and the atmosphere is heavy with material calculation. Keep your own values and your own accounts.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope for lasting security and the means to look after the people you love. The fear underneath is of losing it all. The card says the estate is sound. Enjoy ruling it.

Reversed

You fear becoming hard or greedy, or fear being controlled by someone who is, and part of you may hope that enough wealth will make you safe from everyone. It will not. Choose generosity.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in solid prosperity: a venture established, wealth managed wisely, security that supports others. Keep the stewardship generous and the result endures.

Reversed

Left as it is, this ends in wealth without warmth, a rigid estate that stops growing. The spread shows where the grip tightened. Open the hand and the ending changes.

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

Material stewardship is shaping this from underneath: resources, stability and someone's long practical judgement. The hidden influence is an estate being run well, perhaps by you without the title.

Reversed

Beneath this is wealth or control gripped too tightly, a fear of risk that has stopped growth, or money used as leverage. The hidden influence is a king who measures everyone by what they own.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Run the estate generously. Build steadily, provide for others from a position of plenty, and treat what you hold as stewardship rather than possession. Keep the sceptre light.

Reversed

Open the hand. The advice is to loosen control, take a measured risk, and stop using resources to steer people. The vines bear fruit for someone; decide who.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are established, prosperous and generous, a provider and a practical mentor. Expect sound advice and real support, with a preference for the steady over the bold. Accept the patronage without losing your own direction.

Reversed

They are controlling through money or position, stingy, or so risk-averse that nothing moves. Expect material calculation in every exchange. Keep your own accounts and your own values.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a shared estate: security built together and the generosity that comes from having enough. The bond is prosperous and steady. Keep it a stewardship, not a ledger.

Reversed

You are joined by money or control, resources that bind rather than support, or by a shared fear of risk that has stopped the relationship growing. The vines are not bearing. Loosen the grip together.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Prosperity divides you: how to use what you have, how much to risk, who provides and who decides. Stewardship on one side reads as control; ambition on the other reads as recklessness. Agree what the estate is for.

Reversed

Control through money has opened the gap: a decision dictated by who pays, a generosity withheld, a risk refused. The division is about what wealth is for. Answer that together and the grip can loosen.

Other spreads

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road is stewardship: build steady prosperity, provide for others, manage well. It leads to lasting security and asks generosity along with discipline. It is the estate road.

Reversed

This road grips the wealth or uses it to control. It leads to a rigid estate that stops growing and people who leave it. Before you take it, open one hand and see what grows.
