The image

A crowned man sits on a stone bench clutching a pentacle to his chest with both arms, with another balanced on his crown and one under each foot. A city stands behind him. He is holding so much that he cannot move or see the city.

Upright meaning

The Four of Pentacles is security achieved by never letting go. The man has four coins and uses all four limbs and his head to keep them, which means he has nothing left to do anything else with. In a reading it shows saving, holding, control, stability that has become rigidity, and the understandable wish to protect what was hard to get. It is not a bad card to have after loss. It becomes one when the grip outlives the danger.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the coins loosen. The card shows letting go, generosity, spending or sharing after a period of holding, the release of control, and the discovery that opening the hands does not lose everything. It can also mark the opposite swing, money or security slipping away through carelessness, or a miser who finally loses what he guarded. Mostly it means the grip is easing. Let the blood back into your fingers.

Four of Pentacles: yes or no?

Upright
Maybe
Four of Pentacles answers neither yes nor no: it points to holding on and security, and the answer turns on choices still to be made.
Reversed
Maybe
Four of Pentacles reversed softens a hard card into a maybe: letting go and generosity. The outcome depends on what you do next.

Four of Pentacles by topic

How the card reads when the question is about a particular part of life. Choose a topic on any spread and these appear beside each card’s position reading.

love and relationships

Upright. Holding on: to a partner, to control, to the way things are. Security matters and so does breathing room. Ask whether you are keeping the relationship or clutching it.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: letting a partner have room, risking generosity, trusting instead of guarding. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

work and career

Upright. Holding on: to a job, a budget, control of a project. Security matters and so does room to move. Ask whether you are keeping your position or clutching it.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: delegating, spending where it counts, risking a change. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

money

Upright. Holding on to money: saving hard, controlling the budget, guarding what you have. Security matters and so does breathing room. Ask whether you are keeping or clutching.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: spending where it counts, giving, risking a little. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

health and wellbeing

Upright. Holding on: control over diet, routine, the way things are. Security matters and so does breathing room. Ask whether you are keeping your health or clutching it.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: easing control, trusting the body, letting go of a rigid regime. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

family and home

Upright. Holding on: to the house, to control of the household, to the way the family has always been. Security matters and so does room. Ask whether you are keeping or clutching.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: letting a child go, sharing control, trusting the family instead of guarding it. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

personal growth

Upright. Holding on: to possessions, control, the way things are. Security matters and so does breathing room. Ask whether you are keeping your life or clutching it.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: risking generosity, trusting, letting go of control. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

the spiritual path

Upright. Holding on: to beliefs, possessions, the way things are. Security matters and so does breathing room. Ask whether you are keeping your faith or clutching it.

Reversed. Loosening the grip: letting go of control, risking generosity, trusting. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

a decision

Upright. The option that holds on: security, control, keeping what you have. Valid, and ask whether you are keeping or clutching. The hand that grips cannot receive.

Reversed. Choosing to loosen the grip: the option that risks, gives, trusts. What you held so tightly is still there when you open your hand.

Waite’s divinatory meanings

Quoted from A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1911), public domain.

Upright: “The surety of possessions, cleaving to that which one has, gift, legacy, inheritance.”

Reversed: “Suspense, delay, opposition.”

From The Pictorial Key to the Tarot

Waite’s full description of the card, Part II of the 1911 text, public domain.

A crowned figure, having a pentacle over his crown, clasps another with hands and arms; two pentacles are under his feet. He holds to that which he has.

Four of Pentacles in a spread

How the card reads in each position. The first ten are the Celtic Cross; the rest are used by the Horseshoe, Relationship and Two Paths spreads. The smaller spreads reuse these positions.

Celtic Cross · Position 1

The Significator

What is at the heart of the matter right now?

Upright

At the centre of your situation is a tight hold on something: money, control, a position, a feeling. You are secure and you are stuck. The reading is about what the grip is costing.

Reversed

You are at the point of loosening a hold you have kept a long time. The matter is about letting go of control or resources and finding out what remains when you do.

Celtic Cross · Position 2

Crossing Card

What crosses, challenges or shapes it?

Upright

What meets your situation is a need for security or a reluctance to spend, yours or another's. Caution has become a block. Something has to be risked for anything to move.

Reversed

The force across your path is a loosening you did not choose: money going out, control slipping, a change in what you can hold. Resisting it costs more than it saves.

Celtic Cross · Position 3

Foundation

What is the root of this?

Upright

This grew from a period of careful saving and holding, perhaps after a loss that taught you to protect what you have. That caution is the ground beneath the present.

Reversed

At the root is a time when you let go, by choice or by force, and learned what survives an open hand. The present carries that lesson, or that fear.

Celtic Cross · Position 4

Recent Past

What is passing out of the picture?

Upright

A period of holding tight and building security is receding. The coins are safe. You can begin to use some of what you were only guarding.

Reversed

A stretch of letting go or of loss is losing its hold. Whatever slipped away has gone. Notice how much is still here.

Celtic Cross · Position 5

Crown

What are you consciously aiming for, and what could this become?

Upright

What you consciously want is safety: to keep what you have and never again be caught short. That is understandable and partly achievable. Aim at enough security to act, not so much that you cannot.

Reversed

You consciously want to release control and live more freely. That aim is good. Make sure the letting go is chosen and gradual rather than a sudden drop of everything.

Celtic Cross · Position 6

Future

What is coming next?

Upright

A period of consolidating and holding is ahead, a time to save and protect rather than expand. Use it, and set a date for when the grip will loosen.

Reversed

You are heading toward a release: spending, giving, or a loss of control you will come to find freeing. Prepare by deciding what you truly need to keep.

Celtic Cross · Position 7

Emotions

How are you meeting this, inside?

Upright

Inwardly, you are guarded and possessive, protecting yourself and your resources closely. That caution has served you. Ask whether it is still responding to a real threat.

Reversed

Part of you is ready to open your hands and part is terrified of what will fall. Open one hand. Nothing you actually need is held only by force.

Celtic Cross · Position 8

External Forces

What are others, and the wider setting, bringing to it?

Upright

The people around you are cautious and controlling, or the atmosphere is one of scarcity and holding on. Resources are being guarded, perhaps from you. Make your case patiently.

Reversed

Your surroundings are loosening: people becoming more generous, control relaxing, money moving. The atmosphere now favours sharing. Accept what is offered.

Celtic Cross · Position 9

Hopes & Desires

What do you hope for, and what do you fear?

Upright

You hope for security that cannot be taken away, and fear loss above almost everything. The card says the fear is doing the holding. Hope instead for enough, and you will have it.

Reversed

You hope to let go and be lighter, and fear that generosity will leave you exposed. Part of you may want to lose the coins just to stop guarding them. Choose to give them instead.

Celtic Cross · Position 10

Outcome

Where does all of this lead?

Upright

This resolves in security held: resources protected, control maintained, stability kept at the price of some movement. If that is what you want, hold on. If not, the spread shows where to loosen.

Reversed

This resolves in release: control relinquished, money or energy spent, a hold let go and found survivable. Open your hands deliberately and the result is freedom rather than loss.

Other spreads

Hidden Influences

What is at work here that you cannot see yet?

Upright

A tight hold is working beneath this: on money, on control, on a position, on a feeling. The hidden influence is security sought through grip, and it is costing movement. Notice what your arms are doing.

Reversed

Beneath the surface a grip is loosening, by choice or by force. The hidden influence is a release underway, and the fear that goes with it. Opening the hands will not lose what matters.

Other spreads

Advice

What should you do about it?

Upright

Hold what you have for now, deliberately, and set a date to loosen. Security after loss is sane. Security that never ends is a cage with coins for bars.

Reversed

Open one hand. Give, spend or share something, and find out that the sky does not fall. The advice is to make the letting go gradual and chosen rather than sudden and forced.

Other spreads

The Other Person

What are they bringing to this?

Upright

They are guarded and controlling with resources, feelings or decisions, holding tight after some earlier loss. Expect caution that looks like meanness. Make your case patiently and do not grab.

Reversed

They are loosening a long grip, becoming more generous or losing control they relied on. Expect either relief or panic. Help it be the first by not taking advantage.

Other spreads

What Joins You

What holds the two of you together?

Upright

What joins you is a shared need for security: you hold tight to each other and to what you have built. The bond is stable and a little airless. Loosen one coin and let some movement in.

Reversed

You are joined by a release, by learning together to open your hands, or by one person's grip that the other is finally slipping. The coins are shifting. Decide together what you are actually keeping.

Other spreads

What Divides You

What pulls the two of you apart?

Upright

Grip divides you: one holds on and the other wants to spend, share or move, and caution reads as control while generosity reads as recklessness. Both are about safety. Agree what enough looks like.

Reversed

Control relinquished or lost has opened the gap: resources spent one of you was guarding, or a hold released that the other depended on. The division is about what security meant. Redefine it between you.

A Path

What happens if you take this road?

Upright

This road holds on: consolidate, save, control, keep. It leads to security at the price of movement. Take it after a loss, with an end date; do not make it a residence.

Reversed

This road opens the hands: give, spend, release control. It leads to freedom and asks you to trust that what matters is not held only by force. Take it deliberately and the result is lightness, not loss.
