Card 8 of 36 · playing card 9♦ · a difficult card

Coffin

ending · illness · rest · closure

Meaning

An ending. The Coffin closes a chapter, sometimes painfully, sometimes as a relief. It can mean exhaustion, a period of rest or illness, or something boxed away. It is rarely read as literal death; more often it is the end that makes room for what follows.

As a person

Someone grieving, ill or withdrawn.

In combinations

First in a pair, the Coffin names an ending or a time of exhaustion. Second, it describes the card before it: something that ends, stalls or needs to be laid to rest.

  • Rider + Coffin: News of an ending, or the end of a long wait for news.
  • Tree + Coffin: A health concern that calls for rest, or a long-standing matter coming to an end.
  • Coffin + Stork: An ending that leads to change; a fresh start after a close.
  • Coffin + Child: A new beginning after an ending.
  • Ring + Coffin: The end of a contract or a partnership.

As a house in the Grand Tableau

Position 8 is the house of the Coffin. Endings: what is closing, resting or being let go.
